Classics folks: is there a list somewhere of which grad programs aren't accepting applications this year? I want to be able to advise my students accordingly!

Re-upping this thread on classical studies under fascist regimes.
Just finished a fantastic chapter by Philippe Rousselot on Cicero's reception among totalitarian regimes ("Cicéron face aux dictateurs, 1920–1945"), available open-access here: www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

I'm going to do a short thread since its lessons seem unfortunately pertinent now.
Portraying Cicero in Literature, Culture, and Politics
Cicero has played a pivotal role in shaping Western culture. His public persona , his self-portrait as model of Roman prose, philosopher, and statesman, has exerted a durable and profound impact on th...

Any recent PhDs still looking for something for this coming academic year should apply to our postdoc! Its inaugural holder was a classicist!

This.
Part of resisting fascism is resisting the normalization of cruelty and lack of empathy. We are surrounded by horrific cruelty and tragedy. We can’t normalize it. We can’t blame victims without losing our own humanity.

It is truly upsetting that a senior scholar in classics, with the protections and stature of tenure, would openly gloat about the US denying visas to people (often nontenured) due to their political views. Maybe the worst thing I've ever seen on the Classics listserv, and that's saying something.

This includes #classics, by the way. I spent a year at Indiana as a VAP - it was a wonderfully supportive place for me and all the classes I taught were highly enrolled. This is a tragedy.
Bloodbath in Indiana higher ed as public colleges and universities ordered to eliminate 20% of all degree programs, apparently based purely on student demand (=enrollments) and not any rational calculation of need or value.

Indiana public colleges cut almost 20% of degrees
Public Indiana colleges and universities have eliminated 19 percent of their degree programs to meet requirements added to the state’s budget, according to the Commission for Higher Education.

Have biked over it many times. Something about crossing state lines on a long bike ride makes it feel extra epic.
The Chain of the Rocks Bridge; an iconic abandoned span over the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri, just north of St. Louis, Missouri; once part of Route 66, now open for pedestrians and bikes, with one hell of a view!

Revealing quote in this article about the MN assassin.

Everyone with strong anti-abortion beliefs is, in fact, a "fanatic." They all constantly fantasize about killing, whether through abortion bans or murders; they've just been normalized as "religious and conservative."

Really sad that the SCS' TLL fellowship has been defunded. I guess it must have been all the work that it entailed on gender. (/s)
I had forgotten that the postdoc I did at the very start of my career was NEH funded. It’s been canceled. It funded people to write articles on Latin words, in Latin. Lexicography is very woke. 😞

Hard to top this nugget from Cicero's Orator: "I have often used [pathos] with so much emotion that I held a baby boy in my hands while delivering the close of a speech; another time, by making my noble defendant stand and picking up his small boy, I filled the forum with wailing and lamentation."

Hey #classics folk--I've finally found something that I've wanted for over 15 years: a spellchecker for Latin and Greek in Microsoft Word that actually works! Check it out here: drouizig.org/en/spellchec...

To the team who made this, you are my heroes.

Very sad to learn of the passing of Malcolm Heath. His scholarship was second to none, and his ability to make sense of very recherche topics (and I use this word as a classicist!) has helped me understand them more than once. Sit terra tibi levis.

The number of people responding to this with complete earnestness makes me realize that there are now several generations of people younger than me who didn't grow up watching the Naked Gun trilogy every time it aired on basic cable. Sad.

What Would A Woman Do To An Unconscious Man If She Thought No-One Would Find Out?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot over the course of the trial of Dominique Pelicot and his fellow accused: what would a woman do to an unconscious man if she thought no-one would find out?
