Pip Archer was born on air in Radio Four's long-running saga of everyday country folk last week. She's the first grandchild to be born to the first family of farming and yesterday her mum Ruth Archer actress Felicity Finch took her with her to the rehearsals for Murder at Ambridge Hall, the stage version of the radio serial, which opens a national tour in Taunton to-morrow. Well, she would have done. But Pip doesn't really exist. The little white woolly bundle that Ruth Archer will be cradling in her arms on stage at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton is nothing more than a doll. "We couldn't really cope with a brand new baby on stage, says Felicity defensively. "But we might be able to persuade some people that she is real. You never know. It's up to me to make them believe.' The baby in the radio show is real enough, but Archers on tour with Trevor Harrison as Eddie Grundy and Felicity Finch as Ruth Archer (foreground) doesn't actually act her part with the rest of the cast. "The baby in the radio show is on tape," says Felicty. The Archers stage tour features a number of the favourite characters from Last night's TV with FRASER MASSEY the radio drama - Eddie and Clarrie Grundy (actors Trevor Harrison and Rosa-lind Adams), Mark Hebden (Richard Derrington), Mike Tucker (Terry Molloy) and Lynda Snell (Carole Snell). The three month tour also visits the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on April 22; the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon (May 11); the Hip-podrome, Bristol (May 23); and the Town Hall, Cheltenham (May 31).

Incandescent. One of the best pieces I've read about what university means to people and their communities - and what will happen to a city and people after one closes. The *Labour* government and Jaqui Smith in particular should be ashamed of themselves and shamed into doing something. Deplorable.
