Two books for spooky season:
COFFIN MOON, Keith Rosson: Best modern vampire story ever (although it's set in the 70s).
THE TWISTED ONES, by T. Kingfisher: It lures you in with chatty good humor (especially about NPR Pledge Week) and a lovely dog...then slams the door and bites you in the dark.

This novel rules — terrifying, emotional, unputdownable. And damn if Keith doesn’t make vampires scary again. It lives up to all the anticipation following the FEVER HOUSE duology. Many thanks to @sadiehartmann.bsky.social for the shout!
COVER REVEAL! Look at this absolute smoke show of a cover. I love it when authors have consistent branding. This will look so good next to his other two books, Fever House & The Devil by Name. COFFIN MOON @keithrosson.bsky.social @penguinbooksusa.bsky.social 9/9/25

Spent the morning shoveling snow with my kid. We talked about how--because the world is increasingly stupid, unkind, and selfish--we need to work hard at being curious, kind, and helpful to others. Even if we're just starting with shoveling the walk for our community.

Highly recommend Kevin Barry’s The Heart in Winter. Short novel but so moving. I savored every word.

Fun fact: most “American guitar” origin stories begin with migrant workers from Mexico. (The original Fender workshop in California was a community of skilled carpenters from Juárez - Tadeo Gomez’s initials are inscribed on the neck of most early Telecasters). Willing to bet this one’s no different.
This will look great next to my James Buchanan bass!!

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.”

A no less vital admonition that deserves attn:

STAND OUT

“...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

While NJ might be a “blue state”, I live in a rural mountain town surrounded by MAGA flags. So yeah, very happy to construct a bubble, echo-chamber, safe-(sane)-space here thank you very much.

Putting this into the ether in case Bluesky can work miracles: Years ago I read a portion of an incredible novel called Sublimity Canyon and I’ve been trying to find out who wrote it ever since. Damn good story, but the one that got away. If you’re a writer who knows this writer?

Since the election I’ve discovered Bluesky and What We Do in the Shadows. Minor joys, but accumulating.
