Yes! Our discovery that CD2AP loss of function might increase the risk of Alzheimer’s by disrupting dendritic spines directly via F-actin regulation and indirectly via beta-amyloid production is on the cover #jneurosci www.jneurosci.org/content/44/4...
The Alzheimer's Disease Risk Gene CD2AP Functions in Dendritic Spines by Remodeling F-Actin
CD2-associated protein (CD2AP) was identified as a genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). However, it is unclear how CD2AP contributes to LOAD synaptic dysfunction underlying A...

🧠 What if Alzheimer’s risk starts at the synapse?

In our new study led by Mariana Barata, we show that BIN1, a key AD risk gene, regulates inhibitory synapses—loss of BIN1 → hyperexcitability before Aβ.

Alzheimer’s genetic risk factor Bin1 controls synapse vesicle exo-endocytosis in inhibitory synapses
Barata et al. show that the Alzheimer’s risk gene BIN1 is critical for the stability of inhibitory synapses. BIN1 deficiency accelerates the synaptic vesicle endocytic cycle, leading to synapse loss a...

If you're in the US, considering Europe for your PhD, and you identify as a minority, I will chat with you and review any application documents you need 🧪
Many US students don’t know how to seek opportunities outside the US. With some help from our colleagues in EU and Canada, we could put together a consolidated website of PhD opportunities and scholarships outside the US, organized by field. There might still be time for this year in some places.
I’m having similar conversations and sharing international opportunities a lot. I’m sure for a lot of US based trainees that feels overwhelming. I moved to Europe for my postdoc.Happy to chat with any trainees about my experience if it would be helpful.

My NIH study section that was to meet tomorrow was one of those canceled. This represents many months of work by the applicants and by the NIH staff and reviewers. Devastating is the correct word.
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Highly-respected non-profit journals like @dev-journal.bsky.social support scientific communities

But after rejection at glam journals, it is tempting to avoid re-review by sliding through commercial ecosystems

BUT WAIT! LOOK! “We will consider papers with reviewer reports from other journals” 😍
