It's always a good feeling when you believe that you have solved a mystery that's been bugging you for a long time haha. Whatever this club belongs to (from the dead individual) is likely the same as the live one seen back in 2024! Believe it to be "B. riisei" but we shall see :)

I know that this is typically strictly a cephalopod page, however, every so often there is something I have never seen before but have looked forward to seeing for the first time!

Austin @brachioteuthis.bsky.social is talking about brachioteuthids (a type of deep sea 🦑 ).

He’s trying to figure out how we can more easily tell the difference between species.

He taught us about some …unique! suction cup morphology. Just on the males, on the hectocotylus, they have a…um. EPS.

We've had a couple of cock-eyed or jeweled squid species (family Histioteuthidae); this is a nice H. macrohista, one of the more extreme examples of tiny mantle (yes, that's the whole thing!) compared to head & arms. See also distinctive long arm-tip photophores. #SQXmas2025

This year's Squidmas samples are from sub-Antarctic waters. This is Galiteuthis, a 'glass' squid (Cranchiidae, same family the colossal squid). There are undescribed species in this genus so looking forward to genetic results! #SQXmas2025

Huge shoutout to @tonmo.com for the wonderful interview the other day! It was such a wonderful opportunity to share a bit of information regarding such an underrepresented family of squids with tons of complexity to them! Thank you, Tony, for the best time, looking forward to doing it again :D

The footage here is framed as rare, but one of the interesting findings from recent cruises to Antarctica by @schmidtocean.bsky.social and @deepseauwa.bsky.social is that cephalopods which previously had very few video records are actually incredibly common.
🚨 Rare find alert! Meet a deep-sea creature never before seen alive: the Antarctic gonate squid! 🦑 🤝 Linsey Sala, Scripps Pelagic Invertebrate Collection Manager, told the @nytimes.com that this discovery can reveal how this species lives at great depths. ⬇️

So some extraordinary news came out today! We have received footage for the first time of a colossal squid in it's natural habitat! I remember watching the footage live and being in chat saying "Could this be Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni"? And glad to hear it was!!

But watch out. Just because they're small, doesn't mean they are sweet. This is the only known species of toxic cuttlefish!
