Happy birthday to the great Wendy Carlos (b. 11/14/39), whose quotation of the Dies Irae at the beginning of The Shining is so indelibly marked that it became the standard bearer for dozens of Dies Irae quotations that followed in its footsteps.
Everyone knows Wendy Carlos's "Dies Irae" at the beginning of The Shining, right?

Sad to miss AMS/SMT this year, but hope that you all swing by the Palgrave table to thumb through my book "Hearing Death at the Movies"!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, so obvious reasons...none more so than I get to re-post this version of the "You can't handle the truth" scene that I repurposed into a vignette about me buying too much Halloween candy.

🚨 Exciting news to share for my Boston followers 🚨

I'll be giving a Lectures on Tap talk in two weeks...if you ever wanted to hear me wax philosophical on the Dies Irae while getting drunk, now's the time!

I regret to inform you all that the new TRON movie features Jared Leto -- a living, breathing program in the real world -- not only describing Mozart as the greatest composer "that Western culture has created," but also says that he prefers Depeche Mode because he loves their "synth-pop melodies."

Not gonna lie: Jigoku (1960) is a tremendously slow burn, but once that candle is lit, it does not hold back.

It's been a good week!

Lots of standouts, especially "Good Boy."**

"Sleepy Hollow" & "The VVitch" are stone-cold "fall" classics: cold, foggy New England vibes that are perfect for the holidays.

Argento films and "The Descent" are always good, bloody fun.

(**spoiler alert: the dog lives!!**)

Don't mind me, I'm just sitting here listening to the OBAA score by Jonny Greenwood and figuring out when I can see it again.

I'm up to 70 horror(ish) films in 61 days..at least 1 a day since August 1st. The last week has seen some real ups ("Hellraiser," "Rocky Horror,") and downs ("M3GAN 2.0," "Neon Demon"). Looking forward to re-visiting some classics as we round into October proper!

Did I foresee the ending of today’s Arsenal match a month ago? If Mikel needs anymore help on the sideline, he knows where to find me.
Buy Eze, move Odegaard to the 8, and Declan to the 6. This solves all the problems, no?

Not to say that I’m father of the year, but I put on “Citizen Kane” this afternoon and without any prompting my 13-yr old sat down to watch with me.
