Delighted to see the Berlin Phil concert of Williams’s music (TWICE) last weekend! Stéphane Denève was a wonder as conductor & the Phil were phenomenal. Denève gave his flowers to Williams, leaving them on the score on the podium. A class act 🥲

Was great to return to Évry University, Paris, last week to present my paper of Georges Delerue’s score to Platoon, discussing tensions between it and Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

Wonderful university. Wonderful colleagues. Need to return soon for more pastries.

Watched “What’s Up Doc?” just for Barbra Streisand. Pleasantly surprised by
A) how funny it is
B) how smart / stupid the humour is: perfect sweetspot
C) that the middle act is set at a MUSICOLOGY CONFERENCE!

Any other films mentioning/depicting musicology? (Besides Inside Out 2!)

Exited to return to NYU this summer to present my paper “I don’t think we have enough hot dogs”: Metafilm music in Todd Hayne’s May December (2023). It’ll be my first non-Williams-themed paper at Music and the Moving Image.

Yes, the title came first. The paper will just write itself. I hope!

Quite surreal to see my PhD thesis being cited in Emilio Audissino’s new article, “Canonizing John Williams”. Spurs me on to continue my research, if I can squeeze it between all my new teaching (how do people manage the balance!?)

A wonderful coda to my academic year!
