'What we have lost, and what we desperately need to reclaim, is a different mode of cognition, a historical sensibility....t is a temperament that is comfortable with uncertainty, sensitive to context and aware of the powerful, often unpredictable rhythms of the past.'
The Lost Art Of Thinking Historically | NOEMA
To understand the world today, we must see it as actors of the past did: through a foggy windshield, not a rearview mirror, facing a future of radical uncertainty.

This is the plan. Nothing about crime; all about suppression of the dissent they know is coming
The regime’s playbook:

Launch militarized raids in America’s cities to provoke a reaction.

Then claim the reaction is insurrection to justify even more authoritarian action.

The regime is using state-sanctioned violence to create a crisis.

There is no justification for violence by anyone.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Our problem isn't a lack of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding inequality.

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging."

Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

I wrote about my decision in TIME.

Why I’m Resigning from the NSF and Library of Congress

This is going where we knew it would be going. Offshoring and disappearing “undesirables” with no due process to a gulag where they have no rights.

So heartbreaking and so revealing of the DOGE-MAGA agenda. They want to suffocate anything that stands for truth and beauty and the pursuit of knowledge. It’s really that simple.
I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

Just noting that the militia house in my neighborhood now has its American flags right side up along with a big yellow happy face flag

Yep. Where are you, university presidents? Including my own
Again, the head-down, quiet strategy is bound to fail. It always does. We know this in WI from the Scott Walker years. R1 presidents need to get over their collective action problems & get out, in DC, right now, & engage Congress & the public, before it's too late.
The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

Ok maybe obvious, but need to point out gender aspects of all this. Last week, DT said Ukraine responsible for Russian invasion because didn’t do enough to prevent it. Today Ukraine to blame because didn’t show appropriate gratitude. Ukraine as colonial feminine. Russia and US dominating masculine.

In explaining the concept of the State, I’ve done an exercise with Gen Ed students: ask them to name things tax $ pay for. First answers almost always things like welfare, prisons, police, etc. With some coaxing someone will eventually timidly offer “fire department?”, “roads?”.

So Trump has now come out against the spork and in favor of plastic straws. What’s next? Perhaps call for a ban on reusable grocery bags? Or that other symbol of wokeness, the tampon?
