COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update, 1/21/25*
Holiday Week

Flu hospitalizations continue to fall away. Other early indicators are also dropping.

RSV appears to be rising, Covid looks flat.

The holiday has likely depressed totals, but the situation has clearly improved!

I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.

The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

Flu hospitalizations have dropped significantly, but remain higher than the peak in an average pre-pandemic year.

Other early indicators like Positivity and ED visits have also dropped.

Funny how basic airborne infection controls (masking, HEPAs, window cracked 2cm) are framed as a "burden," while the burden of being repeatedly exposed to Covid is dismissed as anxiety & goes unacknowledged

This is a WILD set of headlines.

1. Pediatric Flu deaths are higher than ever,
2. They are strongly associated with being unvaccinated,
3. Pediatric vaccinations have been steadily dropping, &
4. RFK Jr removes flu vaccines from the pediatric vaccine recommendations 🤦‍♀️

CDC data show ~11% of U.S. pediatric flu deaths in 2024–25 occurred despite full vaccination.

This shows vaccines certainly help, but without clean air, masking and sick-leave policies etc, some kids are still left vulnerable.

Pediatric flu deaths are a policy choice

Holiday Week

Flu has blown past previous records for weekly hospital admissions.
More people were hospitalized for flu last week than any week these records have been kept (ie, since 2004).

There is no sign of slowing yet.

Holy Moly Colorado!
Flu data updated early.

The previous record was in 2014, when 582 people were hospitalized in a single week.

We just eclipsed that week by a full 34% (and the data for last week remains incomplete)!

Holiday Week
Partial Update

Flu is now in record-setting territory. More people were hospitalized for last week than all but one week in the last 10 years.

Positivity & ED Visits are sky high.

Kids continue to be hit HARD.

I want to contextualize the flu situation right now in #Colorado:

Less than 20 weeks have ever recorded more people hospitalized for Flu in the state than last week, going back as far as 2014. (Most were last year, the worst flu year ever)

AND Last Weeks total (334) is still incomplete data!
