Presidents past and present 🇮🇪

President Connolly was joined at the Áras by her predecessors Mary McAleese, Michael D Higgins and Mary Robinson.

None of what's in this article is surprising, unless you've been living under a rock for the last couple of years. But it's somehow still shocking.
The dehumanisation of Palestinian people is deliberate and unforgiveable.

What bothers me is that impartiality and balance are two different and incompatible things. Impartiality means that you don't intervene to put your thumb on the scales. Balance necessarily requires that you intervene to artificially make every issue look like a 50/50.

Unfortunately Carl is right, until FF & FG actually consider thousands of homeless kids a crisis which effects them & thier voter base, they won't act.

Lunatics like this are emboldened when the Tánaiste & other gov ministers scapegoat migrants for their neoliberal decisions of austerity that suck the country dry.

I know we all know this, but it still needs to be said every time.

We saw how Irish media reacted to Catherine Connolly winning the presidential election with her campaign 🤯🤦🏾‍♀️

“Remember, folks: Every time the Right wins an election, it’s an undeniable expression of the will of the people. If a lefty wins, it’s just a blip.”

The New York Times quickly sending out Douthat to argue that Mamdani’s victory doesn’t really matter is so predictable it borders on self-parody.

This is so, so important, and so, so frustrating. It's gotten so much worse since 2019, and it's going to keep getting worse - we've already seen it happen so clearly in the UK and US, and now FF & FG are diving head first into it. #SpéirGorm
Regarding the rightward turn FG & FF are taking on all kinds of immigration, here's a piece I wrote Nov 2019 on far-right rhetoric entering mainstream Irish politics.

"This is a pattern: extreme rhetoric is heard, listened to and begins to seep into mainstream politics until it becomes part of it."

It shouldn't need to be explained to anyone, so soon after the Soldier F verdict, why Irish people might not want to be socially obliged to donate to a charity committed to uncritically commemorating all British wars, including Iraq and Northern Ireland, and financially supporting their veterans.

79% of homes sold in Dublin this year were bought by landlords, 75% by large landlords. About 1 in 5 TDs are landlords.

This is disgusting dog whistling. The problem has never been people seeking asylum. The problem is people seeking to endlessly profit from folks just looking for a home.
🗣️ "The one thing that there is a problem with is housing right across the state, and the more that come to seek asylum, the more pressure it puts on that system.” - Fianna Fáil Minister of State Timmy Dooley

I think in general I have a fairly high “politician forgiveness” threshold because I understand they face a firehose of shit everyday and also in a democracy they have to comprise all the time, but Simon Harris not standing up for immigrants in this moment feels like one that crosses that threshold

All I want from social media is posts from the people that I follow, in reverse chronological order. That's it.
Same with replies. Just what's there, in order.

I don't want Bluesky to choose what it thinks I should see, or what should get priority. If I wanted that, I'd go back to Twitter.
