Did u know? Cold weather can be as dry as a drought when all available water has turned to ice. To keep small souls hydrated, fill up containers with warm water a couple of times a day, putting a stone in as a bird perch. Hot saucepans can also be used to melt holes in frozen ponds. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🐦‍⬛💧❄️

These long nights with very hard frosts are the times when Wrens are triggered to nest communally. Take care not to disturb sheds or outbuildings as night time approaches, if you have Wrens in the garden.
They only approach in the deepest gloaming & can be hard to spot.

3/4 On really cold nights, wrens are triggered into communal roosting to conserve body heat. You'll notice that I placed a temperature probe in this nest box and the differential in ext/int temperature was remarkable.
As soon as milder weather arrives the birds revert to roosting singly or in pairs.

Did u know? As summers get hotter & drier, gardeners can do a lot to mitigate the damage done to wildlife & soil by the sun. Create borders that have cheek-by-jowl planting. The ground-level green canopy you create will protect small souls from heat, stop the soil from drying out & look fab. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐜🐸🦎🐀

Did u know? Patios are barren spaces that can be rewilded to create new habitats. Mine has wildflowers that have self seeded in every gap; moth & b'fly pupae overwinter between patio slabs; pots provide quiet shelter & summer forage for small souls; water butts collect precious precipitation🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐜🦋

Did u know? Nothing says *new beginnings* more than the natural process of metamorphosis. This is a pic from last summer, of a Common Darter dragonfly emerging, in its adult form from its aquatic nymph stage.Insects are amongst the most precious lifeforms on earth,so let's protect them in '26. 🪲🌍🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱

Did u know? In '26 make a decision not to buy peat - it needs to stay in the ground, where it belongs. Instead, buy peat-free plants, or employ the services of these decomposing dudes & make your own compost. Just collect your organic & brown cardboard waste & watch the worms make new soil.🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪱

I haven't used peat for 20 years. It is perfectly possible to garden without it so why are we still using something so damaging to the environment.

Did u know? The next big event, eagerly anticipated, in the wildlife garden is frog & toad mating season. All eyes will be on my wildlife ponds (no fish in them)from Jan-March. I'm so excited to see the writhing gatherings of randy "ribbets" & then those tell-tale beautiful blobs of spawn. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🐸🦎
