Out of spite this would make me mention Michel Breal in my acknowledgments (who apparently developed the concept of semantics in 1883, which LLMs are based on) www.dataversity.net/articles/a-b...
A Brief History of Large Language Models - Dataversity
The history of large language models starts with the concept of semantics, developed by the French philologist, Michel Bréal, in 1883.

What do you think of this? "Use of AI for writing assistance should be reported in the acknowledgment section." ICMJE

I don't think non-sentient bodies should be listed with sentient bodies. Giving machines the same status as humans in Acknowledgements is setting a worrisome 'precedent'. #medlibs

I'm reading a William book and this is great! Famous (and rather pompous) actor is walking down the village street, encounters William. Do you know who I am? he asks. No, said William, an' I bet you don't know who I am either. LOL!!!
Gives me an excuse to post the Best One-liner of All Time, which was from Bob Monkhouse.

"They laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian. Well. They're not laughing now."
This weekend @samiraahmeduk.bsky.social and @gkw.bsky.social are recording episode 3, looking at shows from Nov 1984. Please do weigh in if you've any thoughts on Bob's Full House, Ray Davies' Return to Waterloo, Juliet Bravo, The Gentle Touch or Rentaghost (we're looking at it's very last ep).

Well, I found out I can subscribe to blog feeds in Thunderbird. Hooray! I'm really liking Thunderbird as an email client. I have 3 email accounts added to mine. No logging into separate accounts - all able to be seen in one space. I like!

Trump links autism with Tylenol, backs folic acid as treatment
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday there was a link between the use of popular over-the-counter pain medication Tylenol and the development of autism during pregnancy, a claim which many doctors dispute.

If you want to support all the writers boycotting Bendigo Writers Festival, borrow their books from your library. They get paid and libraries buy more of their books.

Wow! Bendigo Writers Festival (15 - 17 Aug) is making guest speakers sign a last-minute agreement to not mention Israel's genocide of Palestinians. Writers who care about human rights are cancelling. Any writer/guest still thinking of appearing should seriously reconsider. Stand up! Refuse to comply

#latrobeuni attempted censorship by saying no criticism of Israel allowed. 'Scuse me, criticism of Israel (their politicians etc) is not antisemitism. If you criticise Australian politicians, is that unAustralian? No! #BendigoWritersFestival organisers have shot themselves in the foot.
This is ghoulish nonsense from the Bendigo Writers Festival

Trump team axes contracts with publishing giant Springer Nature

At first, NIH told me its contracts with SN were active and that they help “advance scientific discovery”.

Hours later, HHS said the opposite: "Precious taxpayer dollars should not be used on unused subscriptions to junk science.”

Disturbing. But these ppl don't have power to coerce inclusion of 'diverse viewpoints' (ie non-science). I hope #medicaljournals ignore these threats. @drjengunter.bsky.social @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
The Trump regime is now using US Attorneys to intimidate academic journals by sending them letters demanding they explain how they ensure ‘viewpoint diversity.’ Journal editors should be public about this and coordinate to refuse to comply with these fascist tactics.

NIH has rescinded its scientific integrity policy. Hard to see this as anything other than clearing the way for shoddy research on things like vaccines. Regardless of the rationale, it's bad news for public health.
