New cover for Lora Beth Johnson's "HELL TO PAY." What a fun Greek mythology inspired book about a heist in the underworld. Thank you to AD Kristie for having me on!

"It is not quite true that Stratford International has never seen an international train: it sees them rather a lot. What is true, however, is that they don’t stop. Not once; not ever.

"What, you might wonder, the hell?"

So - why *isn't* Stratford International served by international trains?

This week: some scattered thoughts on events in the US; and a surprisingly long-read about why Stratford International station has never seen an international train.

Train Dreams: an admirable job at the adaptation. Edgerton really carries it. Gotta admit, havimg read the book, knowing the plot, I was almost a mess even from the building of the homestead.

So, I saw Frankenstein in the theatre last week. It is very beautiful! But I felt it lacked something that elevates del Toro films (and monster films more generally), which is a deep sense of mystery and ambiguity

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. How corrosive it is that public figures are--more and more shamelessly--ripping the copper wiring out of the walls. Integrity is for suckers. Abusing power is fun. Caring about anything bigger than yourself is lame. An elite class of evil toddlers
I continue to think that one of the reasons this country is falling apart is the wholesale abandonment of public virtue as a broadly shared aspiration. Or even something people should be embarrassed about if they don’t have it.
Fuckin yikes, man

A cool charity in Hoxton that teaches & gives disadvantaged kids skills in filmmaking has asked me a question:

Any female animators want to take part in a mentorship programme they run?

They've been doing good work for 25+ years.

V annoying, personally, to be a person who takes schedules literally, in a world where we're not all doing that. Ugh, not my week this week

Cover for Celine Leonora's "A Lesson in Murder," published by Arena-Verlag. This was my first time working with a German publishing company and they were so polite, and efficient, and respectful 🥲 13/10 client.

What I think of every time someone says they're "thinking of selling and moving to UAE". This, and cartels and money laundering

Photoshop rapidly reducing it's functionality to nil as it repeatedly deletes my brushes (that I'm using, that I NEED!) on updates.
Can't even start a new blank doc now. Gotta be a template.
Bye bye creative professionals, I guess!

Here to Report: One Battle After Another is a top tier movie. Back in the all-timer bracket, after I personally found Liquorice Pizza only ok - I've got no notes here, just a classy, absolutely of-the-moment, pacy and heartfelt poke in the eye of white supremacy, set to great music

I put on the electric blanket for the first time last night, which means it’s that time of year for me to say… if you get cold at night, get an electric blanket! They’re cheap to buy – mine was £40 – and much cheaper to run than heating a draughty British house. And so cosy. Going to bed is A JOY

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

Visual artists, illustrators and graphic designers share their stories about how AI is being used to lower wages, degrade work and even replace it altogether, in this installment of AI Killed My Job.

But the thing is, they all say perfectly reasonable things sometimes - innocuous things anyone might agree with. Things that get people hooked onto the content in the first place.
That's why it's better to be specific when describing what is unacceptable.

Went to see Little Trouble Girls which was quite poetic and lovely.
Amusingly, it opened to a close shot of Christ's Side Wound as depicted in the Prayer Book of Bonne of Luxembourg - an artwork some audience members may have been hitherto unaware of, judging by the shocked gasp, lmao

Do we not think there's a wee bit of a problem, though, because the Epst**n file is sealed (by Tr*mp), and now we know our ambassador for US is compromised by its contents. Essentially, the US president has compromat on the guy we pay to do our negotiations there.
Is this just... all fine?
Sorry but if they boot Rayner over the tax thing but don't boot Mandelson over the 'Bessie mates with the dodgiest, highest profile millionaire pedo the world has known' thing, then I'm done
