Now she had a fierce, long mane of white hair sheared into a mohawk, still sporting the half-royal purple color that Vola helped her paint in. She was strong and revitalized. Given new purpose and knowledge to rebuild her life as a healer. No longer the awkward wannabe punk scared that the Silks were about to abandon her. Vola heard what people called her when they thought Nat wasn’t listening. The Angel of the Silks. Still rail-thin though. Thinner than last month. With as much as she ate, that shouldn’t be the case. Her lavender skin was ashened and not as vibrant as it used to be. It was as if something was draining her vitality. Burning her out in a whole new way. Another question for later. Vola chided herself.

Past Telma's shoulder, a new face drew Kallista's eye. In a room full of devastatingly gorgeous Islanders--each of whom showed some trace of their Pora ancestry in their height, or hair, skin or eye colour--the woman across from Telma was decidedly a mainlander. Her hair falling past her shoulders, though red, was a regular auburn; her eyes, a mundane blue; her skin only humanly pale. She was, in her own right, beautiful. It was the last thing Kallista expected, surrounded by the regulars of the Topmost Branch, for her to see someone who reminded her so much of home. She wanted nothing more than to speak to her, as dangerous as that might be. While most patrons here could be assumed to be allies of the Paxos, who knew about this stranger? And yet ...

"And you say ee-unia, like an Islander, not ai-unia, like a mainlander. I guess you're fully immersed in the Isles, then." "Ha. I wish. I am part Islander, on my father's side, but really the linguistic influence probably comes more from Iona and the other Islanders on my crew. But as I was saying, if there's to be any unification, it needs to happen on equal terms, not a system where Seraphinople sits at the top of a heirarchy." Geni's eyes were wide, a tentative smile playing on her lips. Had Kallista gone too far? How loud had she been, how impassioned her defence? She hadn't thought she was too defensive. But she was three drinks deep, and felt as if she were deeper, if the butterfly feeling in her stomach was anything to go by. "It's all right, Captain. You don't need to defend yourself to me. I'm sympathetic to the cause."

Now, marginally wiser, Phaedra made sure she was up front about her intentions. A forget-your-ex-with-a-fun-fling sort of affair. Or a happy Pride or congrats-on-coming-out. The reason was of little consequence, being with her was a discrete event with a definite end date.

At least, it was not so for Ashrah. Her neck was stiff and sore where the fangs had penetrated her; had she wished to forget what had happened, this would have made the task impossible. But… did she wish to forget? Necessary as it may have been to prevent the nensii from losing her soul to the Abyss, it had been a form of submission, of willingly placing herself in the hands of her enemy. Yet Ashrah had not felt weak, had not felt like she had lost a battle. On the contrary. Having Nitara drink from her alarun had given her a sense of power. Of ecstasy. She might even say of freedom, and that confounded her more than anything else.

Xiuying whirled around, twinblade spinning in a deadly flash of steel and ice that forced Askaly to jump back to avoid it. Putting some distance between them, she unleashed tendrils of blood to snatch the wild cryomancer. Then watched, stupefied, as Xiuying froze the tendrils and shattered them into hundreds of tiny hailstones. Sparkles flew as the twinblade met the dagger. Cheering echoed from the tables, both tables, as if the two were providing a beautiful spectacle, the kind only seen on the grandiose stages of Orasan. And the noise only grew more energetic as the blood battlemage and the cryomancer took new steps in that dance of blades and magic, blood and ice—or, as the nensiis called it, “the theatre macabre.”

The reverential way she slowly smoothes her hands down her body as she undresses her is both endearing and maddening, and Ness isn’t sure if she wants her to speed up or draw this out even longer.

This is a bit of my wip #GirlFrame short story that is rapidly becoming a novella if I'm not careful.
The Incubus' tentacles shred my frame’s right leg while alarms blare in my implants and red triangles appear all over the edges of my cockpit's view screen. Booster failure. Frame mobility warning. Just clicking my teeth twice to clear them from my vision is an Athenian effort. All the while I can feel the Gorgon’s emotion-warping field pushing against the spells Handler put on my mind. I’m sweating buckets, nearly shearing my teeth off against each other, and gripping the controls like I have to tear them out just to fire maneuvering thrusters and bring my guns to bear. Panic slips under my defenses. Maybe it’s my own. It’s difficult to tell with an impossible sea monster floating in space and effortlessly tearing apart my frame. Why can’t I move? How do I respond? "Chart me a path through this dread, Mistress." Hope blossoms in the void behind the beast. At first it’s a shimmer, and my heart soars as I wonder how Handler somehow responded through the ajurative jamming. Then a blade of sunlight and fury appears in the beast’s chest and slices upward to nearly cut the Gorgon in two. It spews viscera and releases the leg of my frame as Blackbird sheds the cloak film of her new Enforcer and salutes me with the longest incendiary knife I’ve ever seen.

She looked around at the items that she used to carve this place into her home. Band posters and the sloppy stack of records and CDs. Vola’s slowly growing piles of notebooks on the coffee table. Waffle’s toys and baby blanket gathered between the couch and an end table. On the counter were boxes of food. Fragile cardboard containers of tea and jars of spices still filled the shelves. She stood up, hands shaking, pacing around the apartment. Waffles trotted as quick as his little legs could carry him, grunting worriedly behind her. Her lavender fingers traced the wall, reflexively pulling away from the spots she had erased burn marks. She’d never admitted it to Vola, but she could always make out the places Mara had left her mark in the apartment, like a sick afterimage. Even now. A bitter voice in the back of her head was grateful to be free of this place. A cell, warded by her abusive ex.

"Iona? How are you feeling?" "Vindicated," the first officer snapped, then lowered her head. Kallista almost jumped at the harshness of the single word, but she understood. Iona had seen the coming tide too. For all the good it had done them both. Iona suddenly smiled, but there was danger in her clenched teeth. "Well, what now, Captain?"  What indeed? There was no returning home to Seraphinople. But she had the ship. She might as well stay free, and keep doing what she'd been trying to do: helping people as and where she could.  As what though? The word was anathema to Kallista, but there was no avoiding it: as pirates.

An excerpt from my Be Gay Do Crimes WIP: Trailing her hand down the railing of the mahogany staircase, she descends to the first floor. It’s strange to wander about someone else’s home without planning to steal anything, and whenever she encounters one of the servants, she tenses and has to squelch the instinct to hide, lie about why she’s there, or incapacitate them. Her habit of counting exits, however, isn’t one she can break.
