Kallista did not say any of this. Instead she asked, "You've been assigned to the Zakynthos too, right?"

"Āe, Commander."

Kallista took her turn to grin with her chin jutting in that defiant Island style. Iona's surprised and delighted intake of breath was recognition enough for now. Kallista slapped her upper arm. "Good. I expect you to be on your best behaviour..." She made sure to catch Iona's eye directly as she added, "Cuz."

"Ehhhhh," Iona crooned with an upwards inflection, then tipped the last of her rum into her smiling mouth.

Going away from her family tomorrow was going to be hard. There was every chance that Kallista would never see her father alive again. But at least she was taking family with her, in a way.

And herself. The girl who wanted to go to sea in the first place. Maybe she was out there, waiting to be reclaimed.

“Tell you what, Tea. While we loop around Tencair, I’ll let you step up here so that I can point out all the best stew and hash houses below.”

“Thanks, Mom,” she replies cooly. “I’m not interested in your starchy, bland Sibylean cuisine, anyway.”

“My, aren’t we the picky eater,” I smile, while putting on my best disappointed mom voice. I tsk. “Oh my dearest Tea, if only you grew up on a wind-swept volcanic rock, you’d learn to appreciate what you had available to you, and all the subtle nuances you can get out of a stew by simply changing the weight and measure of a roux.”

“Fie! Nothing on this world has any flavor,” she continues, picking up the fine sport of jocular conversation. Now this is the type of lighthearted banter with her I appreciate. “My only regret in coming here at all is that you’ve only just started getting any of the best imports from the Republic. I need some spices from my homeworld. I’ve not yet found a single place serving anything with heat, like a piri nut curry.”

Fletcher pipes up. “Isn’t a curry just a stew?”

“No!” she insists. “It’s a slow-cooked, saucy dish of chunky meat, vegetables, and spices, served over a starch like rice. Pungent spices help you eat less and be satisfied sooner. Very colorful, flavorful, and healthy, okay? Nothing like that meat and potatoes vomit you call a stew.”

“What you just described is a stew over rice,” I assert.

“You don’t put stew on top of the starch, you put it in a bowl,” she retorts.

“What does it matter where the starch goes on the plate?”

“Presentation, Ash! And besides, you Sibbies didn't have the slightest clue about chili powder a century ago. With you lot, it’s all like, what? Dill, thyme, celery seed, and black pepper maybe? How absolutely dull.”

“It’s all going down the same mouth hole. And a stew recipe can absolutely call for chili powder. ...

Sorrow slammed into her like a tidal wave and she barely had time to grab a pillow before the sob burst forth. She rocked back and forth into the soft fabric, unable to stop the torrent of memories.

Leo's warehouse. Nathan trips and falls. Amanda moves with unearthly speed, scooping him up. Her horns rub against his forehead, soothing his tears. Her arms coil around him, defensive and strong.

A young Nat chases after the procession. A loose tile skids out from under her shoe and she falls. Nanny pulls her to her feet as Mother turns around. Cold radiance glares down from eyes grayer than the winter sky. Nanny shuffles her away. The tears are hot on Nat’s cheeks. It’s the only part of her that feels warm.

The bed certainly felt like freedom, after she changed the sheets, moved her pillows to the middle, and let herself sprawl without having to worry about the other body usually occupying it.

And so too did it feel freeing to say aloud and with a smile to the bedroom ceiling, "I'm a joellian."

In the dark, she dared to imagine that she shared the bed with another woman. Not any time soon. She needed to grieve the end of her marriage, even if she'd been the one to deal the killing blow. But one day, when the time was right, she was certain there would be someone. There might be a few someones on the way to finding her, but there would be someone who would be home to her, and to whom she would be home. Just as Seraphina and Joelle had one another.

In the vast uncertainty of this first night, with the bare branches of a tree alternately stroking and lashing the wall and window of her bedroom, she was absolutely certain of this one thing.

“Shut up!” Mara gripped the metal door frame. “Every single one of them is guilty. Every. Single. One.” Bright orange flames coated her hands as her ex-girlfriend slammed her palm against the softened metal. The deadbolt sparked at the contact, and Nat’s jaw dropped as the door fused closed. Mara’s bitter, triumphant laugh left her skin crawling.

All right #sapphiclineshare, I'll break out Marcie one last time since she's been my preoccupation this month. But no more! I submitted her earlier this week 🤞

Over time, I came to meet others like him in the taberna, though not all of them were cold or pale. No one said what they were, but I knew, in the way a child does, that they were what some might call monsters. Some wore it unavoidably in the open: horned people; entrancing figures with skin in colours I never saw outside of the taberna; others with extra eyes or limbs. None of them were unkind to the tavernkeeper's daughter. Gaius commanded far too much respect.

I got a sense for what he was too, without ever naming it, in the way he brought home young human men, and sent them home before sunrise, paler than before but otherwise no worse for wear. Most wore satisfied smiles, though that I would not understand for many years. Some were repeat visitors.

In this wise, I became accustomed to the monstrous, and I was quite unafraid.

Victim-blaming rhetoric works against victims of sexual assault by imagining that they were really at fault for the offender’s violence. It works against victims of food insecurity by imagining they are at fault for the wealthy’s refusal to distribute resources fairly.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Food insecurity is ALWAYS a political choice. Famine is ALWAYS manmade. People go hungry because of other people’s decisions. We have more than enough food for everyone, and enormous amounts of it are wasted—literally thrown in the garbage—on purpose.
