Let’s begin, shall we? Chapter 1 finds the Ingalls family on the prairie in North Dakota living out their traditional roles as Pa cuts hay in the baking sun and 13 year old Laura brings him water. Make hay indeed, Ingalls, for the sun will not be shining for too much longer!

Before I start, I am well aware that these books are, shall we say, problematic in places (looking at you, “Ma”) and also things hit A LOT differently than did when I was a kid. But that’s interesting to me, so worth discussing, I think.
