Oh hai, just checking in. I find it hard to be on social media at the moment because…<waves hands in the direction of everything>.
But here is the cat.

Happy Yule. It’s the shortest day and the woods beyond my house are mossy, dark and a little bit creepy.

It is so cold and we cannot seem to get the house warm even with the heating on. It’s beautiful outside but being this cold all day is exhausting.

Chapter 3 of the Long Winter: Fall of the Year. 🧵

Laura knows they are in deep shit but soldiers on. Then they pop out of the slough but oh look! More strange men. Turns out to be the Wilder boys, one of whom will be Laura’s husband in future. But for the moment she feels like a rabbit wanting to run back into the grass.

Chapter 2 of the Long Winter: An Errand to Town, in which Laura and her sister Carrie experience three separate scary situations. 🧵

Let’s begin, shall we? Chapter 1 finds the Ingalls family on the prairie in North Dakota living out their traditional roles as Pa cuts hay in the baking sun and 13 year old Laura brings him water. Make hay indeed, Ingalls, for the sun will not be shining for too much longer!

So, every year around this time I re-read my childhood copy of the Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder. There’s something about it that I find both horrifying and enthralling as a winter story. I think this year I will live post the chapters.
