Let’s begin, shall we? Chapter 1 finds the Ingalls family on the prairie in North Dakota living out their traditional roles as Pa cuts hay in the baking sun and 13 year old Laura brings him water. Make hay indeed, Ingalls, for the sun will not be shining for too much longer!

So, every year around this time I re-read my childhood copy of the Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder. There’s something about it that I find both horrifying and enthralling as a winter story. I think this year I will live post the chapters.
