Nobunaga's Ambition is one of those series that has had dozens of sequels and ports over the years, but never quite caught my attention enough to make me want to play it. It pretty much came across as a 'game for dads.' All numbers and statistics, and not much excitement. I finally took a chance to learn how to play it when it came to the Nintendo Switch Online service, as the SNES version seemed a little more accessible. It's good for something akin to a board game, something not too active, so you can play while watching streams or between doing work. In that aspect, it was pretty fulfilling, for a while at least! It ended up involving a very different kind of strategy than I expected. A game that I was addicted to for a week or so, trying to optimise my gameplay, but once I started seeing all the little RNG annoyances, I don't think I'd want to play it again. Let me get into why. Firstly! I always assumed this would be a strategy game about building armies and regions. It's not. It's a game about one man's lifespan. You pick a region's leader, and then see how far that single daimyo can get before he dies of old age or sickness. With that in mind, although you can choose to be any leader, some of them are literally impossible to win with. The game's called Nobunaga's Ambition because, well, choosing Nobunaga as the leader is one of the few people you can actually reach the end with. (Another viable leader is Tokugawa Ieyasu.) For a while, I tried to play the full 50 Fief mode as Fief 29 (Isshiki, of the region Tango). One of those attempts had rebels in the region defeat me on the very first turn before I even got to see the gameplay menu. Koei. Please stop being mean to me. You can play with up to eight players, but that wouldn't reduce how unfair it would be for different regions. Someone's always going to end up as a leader who doesn't stand a chance.
