Watson’s death is a fantastic reminder that you can be intelligent without being a good person.
The obituary of someone who gained widespread fame through remarkable achievements at a young age and then expected to be taken seriously for anything he said thereafter.

I think we need to stop calling it empathy and go back to calling it decency. It isn't a favour you're doing someone else, it's you proving that you aren't a fucking ghoul

ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections

So far, one paper I helped with is R&R and my first authored one is rejected (borderline RRX) but at least I have a fully written out draft with reviews!

If you’re in a creative field and you don’t lift up the work of your peers, you can’t expect people to care about your stuff
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

When private equity controls the main digital infrastructures and platforms for many HE functions and data collections, it's bound to be trying to capitalize on those assets, and its business objectives may not support the public objectives of the universities locked in to the services it controls.

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

The household has a nasty cold (we tested for C19, negative, and there's no fever etc. so probably not flu neither) which means I should probably not be on social media since my inhibitory control is a little off when I'm sick.

If you are able to complete reviews for @chi.acm.org please make sure you've added your availability in PCS.

I'm on the Learning subcommittee this year, so if you do CSCL/IDC/etc. work...

Hi, folks. Briefly back from taking my own advice and Logging Off. I spoke to the "How to be a Better Human" podcast about my book, and why posting and politics are seldom a good mix.

It was a great, wide-ranging conversation.

Thank you (in advance) for coming to my TED Talk!
