Still unclear whether China & Hong Kong will be placed on FIRS's enhanced tier. One obvious reason is exactly as what @danjarvismp.bsky.social said yesterday—to create transparency around the influence of foreign powers in the UK.

🧵As a targeted advocate with arrest warrants and a bounty, I feel exceptionally vulnerable today:
1. Hong Kong has introduced a NSL extradition provision through Art. 23 sub-legislation.
2. The qualifying period for BNO visa holders to apply for ILR may be extended to 10 years.

Countries shall engage closer to tackle China’s & Hong Kong’s transnational repression. The UK Parliament is debating UK-China relations today at 4.30pm, looking forward to hearing from the Government on holding a stronger stance against TNR and human rights abuses.

Bounty-hunt me and get rewarded $1 million💰
1/ Last week, my MP Joshua Reynolds told me that my neighbours received anonymous letters encouraging them to “take me to the Chinese Embassy” to bounty-hunt me. The Parliament had an UQ on it yesterday secured by @aliciakearns.bsky.social

Thank @aliciakearns.bsky.social for securing this UQ on my bounty. After being wanted on 24 Dec, 3 members of my distant family was interrogated in HK, anonymous letters sent to my neighbours to encourage bounty-hunt, and I have been constantly receiving death & rape threats.

Ahead of the Foreign Secretary’s meeting with Wang Yi, I’ve called for clarity on the UK’s shifting stance on China.

From Hong Kong crackdowns to security risks of a proposed super-embassy, we must not ignore these threats. The UK must stand up for democracy and UK residents' safety.
Dear Foreign Secretary, I understand you will host the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, in London tomorrow. Before that visit, I wish to restate the concerns I have expressed to you and other Foreign Office Ministers in the House of Commons about your Government’s approach to relations with the People’s Republic of China. The Labour Party committed to an audit of UK-China relations in their manifesto, but such a piece of work is yet to have been published. Yet there has already been a clear and deeply concerning shift in the Government’s approach to China, with Ministers allowing a focus on China-UK economic relations to dominate over other considerations in the bilateral relationship. China has increased its repression of pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong. I have met recently with both Carmen Lau and Chloe Cheung, courageous young women who have continued to campaign for democracy and political freedoms in Hong Kong since they were both forced to leave and come to the UK. On 24 December, the Hong Kong government placed a bounty on their heads. In recent days, members of their immediate and extended families have been detained in Hong Kong in a clear effort to intimidate them. The UK should not accept this extra-territorial repression by the Chinese authorities. We must stand up for the rights of UK residents. It is also vital that the UK is clear about the violations of Beijing in regard to the Joint Declaration. In Hong Kong, China has violated the terms of Basic Law and there are now over 1,000 political prisoners including prominent detainees like Jimmy Lai. As you will be aware, I have previously urged the Government to make clear where the UK’s red lines are - such as the one crossed by the imprisonment of Jimmy Lai - and make any positive engagement conditional on commitments to respecting these. It is also in this context that I am particularly concerned by reports that you and other ministers have been actively supporting the application for a new Chinese super-embassy by the Royal Mint. As you will know, the US authorities rejected an application for a similar embassy in Washington DC on security grounds. I do not think it would be appropriate for the UK to agree to this new super-embassy and I urge you to look very carefully at the risk that would be created by a new Chinese embassy in such a sensitive location. I and my Liberal Democrat colleagues are also worried by recent reports that the Government is set to exempt China and Hong Kong entities from the enhanced tier requirements under the new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme. In 2022, the Director General of MI5 said that “the most game-changing challenge we face comes from the Chinese Community Party”. It is hard to reconcile those comments with any decision not to include China in the enhanced tier of the Scheme. I urge you to raise all these issues during your meeting tomorrow with Wang Yi, and I hope that you will update Parliament accordingly.

We told the Prime Minister not to approve the Chinese Super-Embassy plan, citing 4,000 protesters last Saturday. We raised concerns for the 1,900+ political prisoners in Hong Kong. Not a festive LNY reception, and I’m pretty sure we won't be invited again, but we had to speak out.
