Pakikiisa 團結: A Fundraising Talk For Guangfu and Disaster-Struck Areas in the Philippines In Taiwan, supertyphoon Ragasa in late September ravaged the town of Guangfu, Hualien, inundating neighborhoods with mudslide resulting in at least 18 fatalities, a hundred injured, and several still missing. In the Philippines, the most recent Typhoon Kalmaegi claimed at least 200 lives, uprooted hundreds of thousands, and caused billions in damages---just the latest in a string of natural calamities that have rocked the country. It also exposed substandard flood control projects and the vast corruption within the Philippine government that have not only robbed the Filipino people but resulted in hundreds of deaths. All of these are manifestations of the worsening climate crisis and inaction from global governments. Thus, we are inviting everyone to join in solidarity to help fundraise for climate disaster, featuring a talk by climate activist Krishna Ariola and indigenous activist Jing-Jie Chen Temelalj Kazangjilan from Taiwan. Filipino food and snacks will be sold during the event and all proceeds will be given to charities in the Philippines and Taiwan aiding in their respective regions. The 7 members of the police forces who were directly involved in the killing of Affan Kurniawan were only given ‘ethical sanction’ from the police ethical board instead of criminal punishment. For 5 of them, the sanction was only to formally apologize in front of the police ethical board. One was demoted for 7 years and another one was dishonorably discharged. There were 5 parliament members who got deactivated in connection to the protests: Nafa Urbach, Adies Kadir, Surya Utama (Uya Kuya), Eko Patrio, and Ahmad Sahroni. They were deactivated by their respective parties due to their arrogant and insensitive behaviors in response to the protests, angering the public. However, only Nafa Urbach, Eko Patrio, and Ahmad Sahroni were deemed violating the ethical code by the House of Representatives’ Ethics Council, and they were only “punished” with 3 to 6 months unpaid suspension. Meanwhile, 6700+ civilians were arrested in connection to the demonstration, with almost 1000 people still detained as suspects. The DW news reported that it is uncertain how many are exactly behind bars now. Police have not responded to requests to release the current number of detainees. Most notably, Activist and Director of Lokataru Foundation Delpedro Marhaen is in police custody for inciting protests to students through social media. His office and house were raided, and several books and properties were confiscated by the police. Other activists are also in prison for “inciting violence”: Muzaffar Salim, Lokataru staff and ‘Blok Politik Mengajar’ Instagram account manager Syahdan Hussein, activist at Gejayan Memanggil and @gm account manager Khariq Anhar, university student and ‘Aliansi Mahasiswa Penggugat’ account manager The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnasham) recorded 10 people died in the protests, some suspected due to police brutality. Moreover, two people are still missing: Muhammad Farhan Hamid and Reno Syahputeradewo. Their last reported locations are around the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) office in Kwitang, which was damaged by fire in the heat of the protests.

The 7 members of the police forces who were directly involved in the killing of Affan Kurniawan were only given ‘ethical sanction’ from the police ethical board instead of criminal punishment. For 5 of them, the sanction was only to formally apologize in front of the police ethical board. One was demoted for 7 years and another one was dishonorably discharged. There were 5 parliament members who got deactivated in connection to the protests: Nafa Urbach, Adies Kadir, Surya Utama (Uya Kuya), Eko Patrio, and Ahmad Sahroni. They were deactivated by their respective parties due to their arrogant and insensitive behaviors in response to the protests, angering the public. However, only Nafa Urbach, Eko Patrio, and Ahmad Sahroni were deemed violating the ethical code by the House of Representatives’ Ethics Council, and they were only “punished” with 3 to 6 months unpaid suspension. Meanwhile, 6700+ civilians were arrested in connection to the demonstration, with almost 1000 people still detained as suspects. The DW news reported that it is uncertain how many are exactly behind bars now. Police have not responded to requests to release the current number of detainees. Most notably, Activist and Director of Lokataru Foundation Delpedro Marhaen is in police custody for inciting protests to students through social media. His office and house were raided, and several books and properties were confiscated by the police. Other activists are also in prison for “inciting violence”: Muzaffar Salim, Lokataru staff and ‘Blok Politik Mengajar’ Instagram account manager Syahdan Hussein, activist at Gejayan Memanggil and @gm account manager Khariq Anhar, university student and ‘Aliansi Mahasiswa Penggugat’ account manager The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnasham) recorded 10 people died in the protests, some suspected due to police brutality. Moreover, two people are still missing: Muhammad Farhan Hamid and Reno Syahputeradewo. Their last reported locations are around the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) office in Kwitang, which was damaged by fire in the heat of the protests.
