During an almost four-hour workshop, participants documented and reflected on the complexity and richness of life in a new place into eight-page zines. The Cantonese phrase 我掛住你 (literally “I hang you”) is often translated as “I miss you.” Relocation brings many challenges, and among them is this constant sense of “hanging”: suspended between the old home and the new. Every zine echoes such a sense of suspension. After moving to Cymru/Wales, a new word emerges: hiraeth, a nostalgic longing for a home or place. Recent example: one very high profile award winning activist (former athlete) has been touring conferences preying upon young women. [THREAD.] 2/ Late night texts to female attendees have included invitations to “cuddle”. One text sent at a different conference even bluntly asked if she wanted a threesome. 3/ This man isn’t alone. Every young women I know attending these things fears they’re going to be gawped at. This is not a criticism of the many wonderful people who work to defend human rights and put so much effort into these conferences. They, too, would agree that this must stop I’ve lost count of the number of times traumatised survivors desperate for a platform to tell their story were readily exploited by male power dynamics. Late night after-after parties. Platforms with strings attached. Etc etc. It is a bitter irony that one of the last acceptable bastions of male privilege would be the very community which should be a bulwark against it.
