Getting around the suburbs of San Francisco with one car and too many electric bikes

Ran into this recently on the Guadalupe River Trail in San Jose. So silly to have these needless wiggles on these routes!

9 PM on a Saturday night on pedestrianized B Street in San Mateo.

Took Caltrain down to Menlo Park for dinner, their downtown was a ghost town compared to this.

Driver violence is completely out of control in the Bay Area and it's time to start talking about more direct solutions.

Enforce traffic laws with an iron fist, and jail every single violent driver -- or let me open carry my gun and protect myself the very old fashioned way.

I prefer the cops.

@bmj.com, a renowned health journal, slams car bloat:

"Cars are becoming steadily larger, [and] with this comes potential harms to health...Action is needed locally, nationally, and internationally to curb sales of new SUVs and to reduce their presence in urban areas."

San Mateo County will have a new Sheriff soon. My thoughts on why traffic safety is public safety and how we should take that more seriously at the county level:

Why Road Safety Belongs on the Sheriff’s Agenda
The next Sheriff can save lives by treating crashes as preventable acts of violence, not inevitable accidents.

This doctors office spent a lot of time explaining the complexities of their parking garage when confirming my appointment. Luckily I get to skip all of that and use this kinda-bike-parking.

Beautiful day out here today!

It's disappointing that the CA’s e-bike voucher program is getting cut with the funds being diverted to EVs

Data from the Denver program says e-bikes = huge value:
• 40% cheaper/mile than EVs, ~75% cheaper than ICE cars
• Operational emissions ~3% of EVs; ~1% of ICE cars
California Quietly Kills Electric Bike Vouchers, Sending Money to EV Incentives Instead | KQED
The California Air Resources Board gave no public announcement but confirmed that it has redirected the e-bike program’s funds as “a recent outcome of legislative direction.”

A car lite cost story from Reddit

Total saved over four months: ~$1350. One time spend on bike kit $1900. Breakeven ~6 months. How often does car math even have a break even!

Additional win of losing 6 pounds and being less stressed.

Great discussion of the real-world tradeoffs: redd.it/1oo7vxj

Grateful for @samtrans.com & @caltrain.com operators. Without them my household would be compelled to buy, insure, fuel & park a car—something none of my neighbors are aware that they are being spared from—thanks to San Mateo County transit workers!
Where would our city be without its transport workers? They keep London moving and as we’ve seen in recent days, they can be heroes in moments of real adversity.

To every transport worker, from our bus drivers to our station staff: thank you for all you do. You are truly valued.

I was super impressed by the bike infrastructure connecting to the trail. Two different separated bike lanes on roads connecting to/from the trail.

The trail itself is incredible! Kinda wish I was moving to this building long term. It was fun passing traffic on 880 on an e-bike ⚡️🚲💨

Taking the big bike on the big train. I’m going to ride on the Guadalupe River Trail for the first time to get to a work event. Excited to try out this trail and a bit worried about bike space on Caltrain on the way home. Adventures ahead!

No bike racks at the local Safeway so we get this nice spacious parking spot!

I’m always amazed by how often these floppy crosswalk signs have to be replaced. I bike by these two at least four times per week so let’s see how long this version makes it!

Currently looking pretty shiny and new. How long do you think they will last?

Going from 1 car to 0 cars is often where this conversation gets stuck. It’s the hardest one to figure out. But exploring going from 3 to 2 or 2 to 1 can have a huge impact on family finances and health. Give it a listen!

Love this bit: “healthcare costs, which are car related” 😍

Air pollution isn't even part of the active transportation in our SF Bay Area suburb. Great to see these wins! Makes me wish our local media dug a bit deeper than their favorite bikes vs. parking narrative.
“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.”

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life.

Common sense.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
