Electric vehicle batteries are typically retired once they reach about 80 per cent of their original capacity, but they could be repurposed in electricity grids to balance out slumps in renewable generation

A reminder: ICE vehicles waste a whopping 80% of energy in their fuel.

EVs are propelled by entirely different mechanisms. Energy enters the vehicle as electricity, which directly powers the drivetrain making it 3-4x more efficient.

Good morning with good news: Renewables and nuclear will generate 84% of European Union's electricity by 2030!

RE rises from 48% to 63%!

Coal plunges 16%/year thru 2030!

Gas falls 6%/yr thru 2030!

EU will reach 100% RE & nuclear.

When?

2040-2045?

Do you remember 2016? We do. Pokémon Go, Beyonce’s Lemonade, Snapchat.

More importantly, since 2016:
💪 25 🇪🇺 countries have announced coal phaseouts❗
💪 61% of coal plants across the continent have shut down❗

Geopolitical tensions might be high, but it's important to remember how far we've come.

EV performance declines once batteries degrade to ~80% capacity. But those batteries are still good for storing excess renewable energy from the grid.
A startup in Nevada is already doing this, & China could meet 2/3 of its grid storage needs by 2050 this way www.newscientist.com/article/2515...

A few people asked for it, so I built it. Battery costs vs NEV sales. As battery pack costs fall toward ~$100/kWh & below, EV adoption doesn’t rise linearly — it inflects. Inflation & supply-chain shocks add noise, but manufacturing scale & chemistry dominate. Chart + data now live. #Bettrification
