the cost of making things efficient is that as soon as they're approaching a perfect state (easy to understand access etc) they look too simple to be considered finished. the specter of ttrpg development is that making a mechanic streamlined also makes it look kind of stupid.

it's a take that gets a lot of ire because a good amount of artists who "make their own merch" (get other people to do most of the work and only provide the art) have put so much stake on selling plastic that any criticism of it is a criticism of their entire livelihood
not especially funny but multiple people flipped their fuckin wigs at the suggestion that Small Business Artists should maybe possibly cool it on making a bunch of merchandise out of straight up plastic and consider what happens to this material when it is inevitably trashed/lost

i would genuinely like to make some sort of impact or at least raise some awareness on shit like merch waste & exploitation. i want to at least encourage people to think critically and hold merch sellers to task for their practices. if you can't tell me where it's from and who made it i won't buy it

If you see an indie artist open pre-orders for items (especially clothing, plushies, etc or enamel pins) which are obviously factory made, check their website and socials for answers to the above questions. Do not support artists who refuse to answer them.
