Reading Notes: James by Percival Everett
Earlier this year I made time to read what had been highly recommended to me: James, by Percival Everett, a novel based on Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. I remember rereading Huckleberry Finn not l…

Envying everyone engaged in first drafts this month. Meanwhile, I'm still editing, which has the benefit of being straightforward and... well, maybe not. I gripe about that in today's blog post. camaduke.com/2025/11/06/a...
A few myths about editing
When I say myths about editing in the title, I mean my myths, the misconceptions I persist in bringing to the editing process.  The biggest myth for me is the idea that once I start editing, I…

Happy National Novel Writing Month for those who celebrate! I'm still editing my work, so I decided instead to set a goal to post more often on bluesky (fingers crossed). Anyone else setting writerly goals for the month?

My weekly check-in is on my blog--sharing thoughts on strategies to get things done, what I'm reading and writing, and democracy, yes, please: camaduke.com/2025/08/08/k...

From this week's blog: I have skimmed a few books this week that haven’t quite grabbed me, and I won’t name them because I don’t like to post something that may sound critical of another author’s work. 1/

What’s working this week:

A strategy that has helped me when everything has been so distracting and upsetting is to focus on why I believe what I do matters. Try it: Identify and acknowledge the intrinsic value of what you do. 1/

Funny story, I decided to channel my political comments to my work with local activist groups so I could spend more time posting on other topics on this Bluesky account and on my blog, and this is what happened: I stopped posting at all.

EVERYONE needs to be brought out of that El Salvadorian hell hole

they were ALL wrongfully deported.

I mean it's good to focus on 'And this guy was here legally and not ever a gang member AND they're Venezuelan'

but NO ONE should've been sent there

Historian here:

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

Just wanted to share what I told my Congress people: Rapid or drastic cuts and changes to Medicaid will have countless harmful effects across the state of North Carolina, especially in rural communities. Cuts to Medicaid funding cause rural hospitals to fold, leaving everyone without resources. 1/

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

USAID matters. I've often disagreed with their strategy and choices, but their work saves more lives than any philanthropy can. It's a rounding error in the federal budget, and one of the best things we do as a country. To see it destroyed overnight by one unelected man is an unmitigated horror.

Let me see if I have this straight—if you live in Texas, your body belongs to Ken Paxton, and if that body seeks freedom out of state, it will be captured and everyone involved prosecuted…🧐 that sounds somehow familiar. If only historical precedent could shed insight…
New: Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit accusing a New York doctor of prescribing abortion drugs to a Texas resident.

This case sets up a legal battle between Texas’ near-total abortion ban and New York’s law that protects doctors from out-of-state prosecution. www.texastribune.org/2024/12/13/t...
