A photo of an dark orange/red and yellow wasp from the front as it rests on its nest. The wasp's face is triangular and has large dark red eyes mottled with black on the sides and powerful yellow mandibles beneath. It's thorax is dark orange red bordered with yellow and 2 yellow stripes in the center. The wings are held above at an acute angle. The nest is grayish green and is constructed of regurgitated wood fibers formed into a series of cellulose tubes.

The silk 'stockings' (AKA 'dirty socks!) of Britain's only (mini & benign) tarantula relative, the Purseweb Spider Atypus affinis trail on the ground and descend to line a burrow to 5cm deep. The spiders grab prey through the stocking wall and emerge only as adult males seeking mates in autumn.

Most Ichneumonid wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) are parasitoids that lay their eggs inside other insects. The larvae hatch and slowly eat their hosts alive. Eventually the larvae burst out of their hosts, killing them. Many species are very useful for pest control. Palmyra Michigan, 13 May 2016.

On dark green leaves rests what appears to be a butterfly—actually a moth. Its wings are black and spangled with brilliant red and white dots. Iridescent blue lights its abdomen and central wing surfaces. Its head and thorax are black dotted by white. Its spectacular appearance signals that it’s toxic. As a caterpillar, it fed on Devil’s Potato. 💀
