The latest Labour Left Podcast is out and I’ve been talking about Keir Starmer with Mark Perryman. Mark’s edited the best Starmer book so far - The Starmer Symptom. I think it’s fair to say neither of us are happy!

Labour Govt has the power to introduce PR - could adopt recommendations of the Royal (Jenkins’) Commission - commissioned by Tony Blair but not implemented. Partially introduced in Wales, Scotland and London. They won’t under Starmer cos he’s an infiltrator from Right controllers.
A Colchester City Council by election took place in my ward in Colchester on Thursday. In this article for @LabourHub I report on the result and put it in the context of the rise of Reform, political fragmentation, PR and the next General Election.

@brynhgriffiths.bsky.social interviews Mark Perryman on his Labour Left Podcast: youtu.be/qb50qcMmcow?.... Great wide-ranging interview, on how politics is best when it's fun, the internal culture of the current Labour Party & (for me) a very moving Class Hero nomination for the late Mike Marqusee.

Austin Harney reports on an important fringe meeting at TUC Conference. On Monday evening, 8th September 2025, we had our fringe meeting at the TUC Conference, titled “Trade Unionists and Irish Unity.” I have organised these fringe meetings for the last four years at TUC Conferences with support from a group called Labour for Irish Unity that was established when Jeremy Corbyn was the leader of the Labour Party.

Today we were out campaigning to boycott Barclays in Colchester as part of Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s Boycott Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) Campaign. The conversations brought back memories of our stand against Apartheid in South Africa during the 1980s.

Over forty people today on Colchester’s weekly vigil for Gaza. It’s an outstanding achievement for the organisers the they never miss a week. It’s notable that more & more passing motorists are hooting their horn to show their support for Palestine.

The Fight For a United Ireland
Geoff Bell of Labour for Irish Unity is on the Labour Left Podcast. Bryn Griffiths, of the Labour Left Podcast, suggests that a new generation of socialist activists can learn an enormous amount from the Irish struggle. If you’re a Palestinian activist today and you are trying to understand why the Labour Party is so bad on Palestine there’s no better place to start than Britain’s colonial history in Ireland.

With Greens at 72% also that means we will have five party competition in most wards (as we did last year in nearly all constituencies). Don’t think that’s ever come close to happening before.

The tide of opinion across the world is moving against Netanyahu’s Israeli Government.
