Massive profits for energy companies, but Blair wants more tax breaks for them
In a week where former Prime Minister Gordon Brown railed against a “global network of wealthy and powerful men that thinks it can act with impunity,” the Tony Blair Institute issues a report calling for the axing the Windfall Tax, as part of a reset on energy policy. Simon Francis responds. The Tony Blair Institute’s so-called ‘reset’ looks less like a fresh start and more like a defence of fossil fuels and an energy industry that has made over…

Rallying MPs, peers, trade unions and civil society to defend migrant workers
Neil Duncan-Jordan MP, the Labour MP for Poole, working with the Work Rights Centre, has organised a joint letter opposing the Government’s proposed changes to settlement rights. The letter is signed by Unison General Secretary Andrea Egan, over 50 MPs, 21 peers and 33 civil society organisations. The cross-party letter was sent to the Home Office yesterday. It warns that plans to double the settlement period for most migrants to ten years, and fifteen years for care workers, will “undermine the Government’s priorities for economic growth, reducing child poverty and strong public services.”

The government is delivering an uplift in funding for inner-London local authorities, hit hard by Tory cuts.

But the delivery of the Recovery Grant scheme still leaves councils like ours facing serious shortfalls.

I raised this in Westminster Hall yesterday.

This would be a bit more powerful if Starmer hadn't raided the rhetoric of Enoch Powell while introducing one of the harshest asylum systems in Europe?
Starmer:

"The real fight is not in the Labour Party. It's with the right-wing politics that challenges that. The politics of Reform... Divide, divide, divide. Grievance, grievance, grievance. That will tear our country apart... I will be in that fight as long as I have breath in my body."

Return to the front line
On the fourth anniversary of Putin’s unprovoked invasion, Mick Antoniw MS explains why he will be back in Ukraine to express international solidarity and deliver much-needed aid. Four years ago, I was standing in the centre of Kyiv as part of a delegation of politicians and trade unionists organised in conjunction with the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign. Ukraine was being surrounded by Russian forces.

We need to remove the impunity with which officers have attacked and removed membership rights
Dave Levy explains why he running for the National Constitutional Committee. The critical issue with the Party’s disciplinary process is to restore trust in its fairness. The rules and their enforcement must offer dignity, respect and make the promises of membership rights a reality. The Party’s failure to do this is illustrated dramatically by the events of the last few days, but with Morgan McSweeney quitting from the government, let’s hope that his departure will lead to a change in approach in the application of the disciplinary process and remove the impunity with which officers have attacked and removed membership rights.

The Labour Party needs to be a signpost, not a weather vane and serve the best interests of the working people of this country.

To achieve that we need to hear the debate amongst the whole swathe of the Labour Party, not just a narrow faction.

I spoke to BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

The government must retain the five-year leave route, stop retrospective rule changes, and recognise public service work.

It is clear that Israel's ongoing actions in Gaza constitute a genocide.

When governments avoid the term genocide, it is not because facts on the ground are unclear.

It is because the implications are inconvenient.

We must call it what it is and do all we can to stop it.

We need an independent inquiry into the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein and British public figures and institutions, and whether they had involvement in or awareness of his crimes, assisted in covering up child sexual abuse, and if due diligence was done for appointments to public roles.

If Starmer resigns there must be an open and democratic leadership contest, not a coronation.

MPs must ensure members can choose from a full range of candidates.

A pluralistic, democratic Labour Party is the only antidote to the poisonous legacy of McSweeney & Mandelson.
