My quick take on the legality of the Venezuela invasion.

On the Legality of the Venezuela Invasion
Executive branch precedents can be garnered to support the action—which does not, of course, mean that it is lawful.

I have been thinking that the major divide in Canadian politics now is really wrestling with Trump’s US or wholly embracing it, and now Pierre Poilievre and Melissa Lantsman are praising Trump’s illegal attack on Venezuela while Danielle Smith pushes separation. It’s a really dangerous time.

Hey @anitaoakvilleeast.bsky.social this is how you do it:
French Foreign Ministry: “The removal of Maduro from power and the violation of sovereignty constitute a serious act of aggression against the dignity of the Venezuelan people and their right to determine their own future.

Always. Read. Elizabeth.
🧵with some preliminary thoughts on what this means for US national security, with a side of IR theory.
Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.

First, despite the buildup, I didn't think Trump would do it.

Yes, it’s true, Republican presidents have been violating the law & Constitution with impunity for my entire life.
Other presidents did it so it's ok!

Presumably this is the official position of the Conservative Party of Canada, given it’s coming from the party’s deputy leader

(Rather than the party’s actual leader, for some reason?)

People break domestic law all the time and many people are never brought to justice. I'm not quite ready to give up just yet though I understand Nathan's frustration.
As we all said, international law, such as it was, no longer exists. The United States, following Israel’s precedent, considers itself to have the explicit authority to blatantly violate sovereignty anywhere in the world and abduct even leaders of other states.

There are no guardrails whatsoever.

Colour me not surprised.

8:30 AM, and still no statement from Canada’s prime minister

Perhaps the Governor General should knock on the door of Rideau Cottage to make sure he too was not kidnapped by the US military overnight?
"Mexico strongly condemns and rejects the military actions carried out unilaterally ... by armed forces of the United States of America against targets in the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in clear violation of Article 2 of the [UN] Charter"

Kind of curious as to what the reaction of the Canadian PM and OLO to this kidnapping will be.

The EU officials rushing to undermine their own side in the Russia-Ukraine war is a particularly insulting act of moral cowardice. Big, empty talk about European values.
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)
