Ethan Evans went from being fired twice for poor soft skills to becoming a Vice President at Amazon, leading a team of over 800 engineers. Former Amazon VP Ethan Evans revealed that a CEO he worked for seduced his wife in retaliation for professional disagreements, resulting in his divorce and departure from the company. After the crisis Lesson 4: Own the problem My direct report volunteered to take the fall. The engineer who wrote some of the code did the same. My manager also sought to take overall responsibility. Ultimately, Bezos knew it was my team and code, meaning I had to own the problem. Amazon has a process called COE (correction of errors), which involves a written investigation of a problem's root causes and a plan to prevent similar problems. I wrote this report and was asked to share it with all my peers in the organization. Publicly sharing an analysis of our mistakes was embarrassing, but doing a good job of it helped me reestablish trust in my leadership ability. The week after the launch, I was scheduled to attend a meeting with Bezos about another project. I considered skipping it, but I decided that if I couldn't face Bezos, I should probably pack my desk and find a new place to work.

This is only marginally related and I'm most likely in the minority with this, but increasingly annoyed by feedback highlighting visual glitches caused by things the players caused themselves.

Mfers complain that TF2 mappers don't test their maps enough to account for every possible variable and then disappear when asked for feedback to see if their specific issue is fixed or not.

I'm not sure who needs to hear it, but if you want us to test more, more players need to help test.

Yes, TF2 breaks and here's how to fix it
Arena_afterlife was working on community servers flawlessly, even with 100 players! I’ve spent weeks making sure the tech is stable, but the discrepancies between Community and Casual, something I had no way to test for, caused things to break. Same was with VSH. If Casual is here to stay, I wish the community creators had access to testing things in advance under the Casual ecosystem. Sure, the community is taking notes on how Casual probably works post-mortem, but if we’d be able to test and debug things as they’ll run in Casual before the update goes live, things would be much more stable! Perhaps, maybe Valve could give the update participants access to a test build of the game before the update goes live, so that we could ensure everything is good to go. On an adjacent topic, modern TF2 maps are made using community-made tools, which Valve, for understandable security reasons, can’t use. We could, hypothetically, bypass many of the engine limits using those tools while remaining compatible with the game, but since Valve insist on compiling TF2 maps on their end, we have to keep our maps compatible with the outdated tools Valve haven’t touched for over a decade. There’s also a handful of engine bugs that could be bypassed if a map could be compiled using community-made tools, but alas. This means that if the community mappers could send Valve the compiled result after testing it on the Casual infrastructure, rather than Valve having to compile the map out of the source files on their end, we’d have higher quality, more optimised, and more stable maps. In fact, this is how it was handled for CS:GO. And it’d also avoid the bummers like missing textures, missing payload carts, or mp3 audio cache getting corrupted. You have no idea how vigorously mappers polish and double check their work after being selected but before the update goes live. In addition to that, Casual sv_pure settings introduce asset loading related bugs on community servers they do not happen.

Morgan Stanley estimates that last year there was around $45 billion of revenue for AI products. The sector makes money from a combination of subscription fees for chatbots such as ChatGPT and money paid to use these companies’ data centers. How the tech sector will cover the gap is “the trillion dollar question,” said Mark Moerdler, an analyst at Bernstein.
