Broadcast engineering somewhere between kilowatts and megabits. Any opinions expressed here are mine alone.

Advertising in traditional media like broadcast TV and radio weren’t and still aren’t sold by guzzling every data point possible about your private life.

Keeping that in mind, would you take that trade?
My kids can barely watch live TV because of the number of commercials. Yeah it's annoying that there are like four 30 second ad breaks during The Grinch on Peacock but you don't realize how bad broadcast TV is until you go back for a day.

I endorse this.
My friend let me introduce you to the radio. It’s going to change your life.

Is this platform still massively against Axia or has it moved more towards acceptance?

Site-to-site VPNs aren’t hard anymore. We shouldn’t be hearing about incidents like this. Ever.

Default credentials aside, there is literally no reason to expose these devices to the open internet.
Careless engineering, not hacking: Don’t blame “hackers” when you leave Barix boxes exposed with default passwords. Never put your Barix on the public internet! This is 100% preventable.
ESPN 97.5 Houston Victim Of Barix Hack - RadioInsight
For years now radio stations using the default Barix logins have been victims of audio feed hijackings. This afternoon Gow Media Sports "ESPN 97.5" KFNC Mont Belvieu/Houston TX fell victim.

🧵 Some TV stations still broadcast on the lower-frequency VHF band, yet most antennas you can buy are optimized for UHF. Receiving a VHF station requires a physically larger antenna! 1/
There is at least one network that has always been difficult to pick up over the air where I live. But yes, it is a great option if what you want is what is being broadcast to your market at that time.

I’ve been saying this for a while:

Broadcasters follow all the rules, fill out all the forms, and we stand at the ready to help local civil authorities spread important messages.

The civil authorities don’t use it at best, and they use entirely wrong at worst.

Broadcasting has depended on Windows for much longer than it should have. Kudos to @fullymodulated.com for shedding light on the issue!
Kudos to Microsoft for making Windows Updates my top source of late-night registry edits and existential crises as a broadcast engineer. Thrilled to learn my 2016 equipment is now "outdated" for no clear reason. Compulsory updates? Call it progress! #WindowsUpdate #ObsoleteByDesign

I put the thread adapter in a Yellowtec CamStud backwards and picked up a new battle scar trying to get it out so I could flip it around. Those threads are sharp!

Update: I ended up writing a bespoke ALSA card profile and udev rules which succeeded at exposing the sinks I needed, but the volume controls for the card’s hardware mixer are still a puzzle to be solved in PipeWire.
I’ve been trying (and failing) to get PipeWire+WirePlumber to play nice with an AudioScience ASI6114. The vendor-provided ALSA driver exposes subdevices for each of the 12 play streams, but the ALSA monitor in WirePlumber only creates a node for subdevice 0. 🫠

I mean you could still really hurt someone with an RE20 even though microphones don’t weigh 30 pounds anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️

🧵 1/4: Microsoft is still dead set on requiring Windows client editions to be linked to a Microsoft account or joined to a domain. This has major implications for broadcast engineering and technology:

Microsoft removes even more Microsoft account workarounds from Windows 11 build
Microsoft has locked down well-documented workarounds in recent test builds.

New BCBP video: I’ve been busy, but in that time I’ve realized broadcast engineering is at a crossroads between the traditional and modern. Going forward, I’m focusing on directing traffic at this intersection of kilowatts and megabits.

Broadcast technology has always believed in and embraced interoperability. In that spirit, I’ve just migrated this account to an ATProto PDS *not* operated by Bluesky PBC. How exciting!

Just so I’ve said it:

Broadcast networks in the United States (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc.) do not require licenses of their own to operate. Network programming is delivered primarily via satellite downlink and IP transport.

The first Debian 13 hosts are going up in the lab. As more broadcast vendors begin delivering software rather than specialized hardware, the reliability of the Linux kernel and other Unix-like systems can help make working with these new software offerings more like their hardware counterparts.

Contrary to popular belief, traditional/over-the-air #broadcasting is not stuck in the past. We just know and appreciate where we came from.

🧵 Regardless of what you think of the content on NPR and PBS, many public broadcasters serve areas that commercial broadcasters just can’t… and some information is better than nothing. 1/

It’s a beautiful day to be out in the field at the tower site! I’m fortunate that all my transmitters are in the city and not a 2+ hour drive away from the station. #BroadcastEngineering
