Looking for books published in the last year or so for my 20th/21st century lit class in the Spring.
Ah, yes, the classic young adult autobiographies Heart of Darkness and Moby Dick.
Thanks AI! 🙄

I'm writing a book. Every working day begins with me rewriting what I wrote the day before, and the day before that. If your reaction to that is "AI could save you that trouble," I know you're not a writer. Computer programs can't sleep on it, can't dream an idea, can't suddenly realize something.

He used the present tense for her! He believes she's going to get better. ❤️😭

@pcbryan.bsky.social and I met in undergrad. I was in an club that played games on campus every Friday and he showed up with mutual friends. We played kickball and he likes to say that I literally knocked him off of his feet running to first base.

SNEH & me 1st met at UHCL when I was volunteering at a bake sale for the Vagina Monologues selling vagina-decorated cookies.
What version of this story you get when you ask for our meet cute depends on how cool we think you’d be with it, lol. 😂 #HATM

I just realized that I think I like this so much because it reminds me of one of my favorite movies, The Apartment from 1960. It gets real dark in the middle, but is also lovely and funny.

1. Reading a bio of Abagail Adams and in her first encounter with John she cheekily insulted him by calling him vain.

Tonight’s #HATM questions:
1 This movie is a pretty odd meet cute, get together story. What’s your fav historical couple &/or their meet cute?
2 What's your fav book/article on medical history/history of the body? Paging @nursingclio.bsky.social
3 What’s on the menu at your place tonight? #HATM

For an update on where this couple is, I recommend Kumail's stand-up special on Hulu Night Thoughts.
The lead-up here is that they were getting work done on their house & caught on their security camera a couple sneaking into their pool w/ a cheese board + knife

Not sure how that will hold up in court my love. Watch #NightThoughts on @hulu

So, my Instagram is nothing but zoos so I can calm down by looking at cute animals before I go to bed. Did all of them do “superb owl” content yesterday? Yes, yes they did (well, most of them did)

Put the Olympics on in the background and it skiathalon came on. We weren't sure what that was so I looked it up. Read it out loud to my husband who replied: "I would just use the classic technique of go fast..." 😆

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.

Talking about the internet and the 1990s in class tomorrow, and I'm having way too much fun watching old news clips from the time either baffled by it or trying too hard to demonstrate how cool it is but ending up just being really weird.

In our attempt to watch as many of the Oscar movies as possible before the ceremony, my husband @pcbryan.bsky.social and I watched this just a couple of days ago (before it was announced as the pick for #HATM).
It's really good!

2. We went out for burgers. Glad to see a number of places closed or closing early because of the weather. Take care of your minimum-wage employees!

And now for tonight's #HATM questions and since it is the US Forest Service's birthday, let's have some fun:
1) What is your favorite national forest? Post pics if you have them!
2) What is on the menu at your home tonight?

Unpopular opinion: If I Had Legs I'd Kick You was equally uncomfortable to watch, but much better than Marty Supreme, and should have gotten more Oscar nominations this year.

As a Millennial this one made me lol. See! We’re not the only generation to kill things/industries!
(Although I don’t think we ever got described as “hardy”)
Young people are killing the umbrella industry

After a "snow day" on Monday and an asynchronous "e-learning" day on Tuesday I'm now getting lots of emails from students telling me they can't come to class tomorrow because they have the flu.
Stay safe and healthy out there, everyone!

Great 🧵
I "know" without having to articulate it to myself that injecting LLMs into the experience of learning to write is bad for learning how to write. It changes writing into something else. Whether this other thing has value or not I can't say and don't think we'll know for a while. I also know that...

...judging those products because they've never had the opportunity to produce those products. AI is positioned as a "superpower" when combined with human capacities but if we're not also developing those human capacities where is the superpower?

This is an amazing 🧵
Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.

As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.

Here's what happened:
