The Mirage of “Direct to the People”: How Trump’s Healthcare Plan Would Destroy the System Overnight

It sounds populist. It’s actually a handout to insurance companies and a disaster for working Americans.

It’s a safe bet he’s never read The Great Gatsby, but the irony couldn’t be sharper. Fitzgerald’s novel is a searing critique of obscene wealth, selfishness, and moral decay – and yet, Trump’s circle saw it as a party theme.
While Children Go Hungry, Trump Throws a Gatsby Party

I love this. Candy + a book. Fantastic.
I always thought if I ever owned a house I’d make us “the book house” each Halloween.

Getting all the chapter books, MG reads, and YA (we had a lot of teens last year, and yes, teenagers are kids don’t be jerks to them on Halloween) sorted for tomorrow!

250 giveaway books! But also candy.

Stephen Miller, Marco Rubio, Kristi Noem, and others have taken over homes within military bases. This would seem to portend not good things.

They are, of course, talking about farm workers, house cleaners, construction workers, small business owners and small children. That’s “the flood” that apparently requires Trump’s heavily armed Stasi/Gestapo of sociopaths.

SNAP benefits are ending. Food banks are bracing. And the GOP’s blaming Democrats for a shutdown they caused. The good news? America sees through it — and you can help your neighbors while keeping truth alive.
SNAP Cuts and Shutdown Chaos: America Isn’t Buying the GOP Lie
The GOP controls the House, Senate, and White House. Yet they’re blaming Democrats for a crisis they created. The good news: most Americans aren’t buying it — and you can help make sure they never do.

Jack DeJohnette has died. His work as a leader, and with Keith Jarrett, Miles, Pat Metheny and so many others changed modern jazz. What a legacy.

Loved this from @meredithmeredith. A plain-spoken look at the nuts-and-bolts reality of running a service like Signal. This is a clear-eyed explainer on what it takes to make apps like Signal work at scale – and the dependence on a staggeringly complex infrastructure only a few companies provide.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

In a logical mind, declaring open season on authoritarian dictators might be the sort of thing that would trigger a moment of self reflection before being said out loud by an authoritarian dictator.
A person close to the White House told Semafor that Trump will coordinate military actions in Venezuela with Congress “when Maduro’s corpse is in US custody.”

If the U.S. military is now obeying illegal orders to carry out extrajudicial killings of civilians in foreign waters, it means they’ll do the same here. That’s a violation of their oath and a grave warning to every American.
Without a doubt, this calls for an independent international investigation. I certainly do not trust the Trump administration, and I do not know enough about Colombia’s public media apparatus to trust them either.

@gregsargent.bsky.social – Your Daily Blast podcast keeps airing Kristi Noem ads, promoting her thuggish, anti-immigrant policies. Are you aware of this? Have you contacted your ad network? I would like to assume you are not OK with getting revenue promoting this garbage to your audience.

The U.S. passport just fell out of the world’s top 10 for the first time. Under Trump’s creeping authoritarianism, America is being walled off by the world. Freedom of movement mirrors freedom itself: both in decline.

Kate is spot on.
I’ve seen posts claiming this “truth” is evidence of dementia, but IMO that’s not the right frame. This is strategy. Since 2021, the right has been rewriting history, bending timelines, to connect their grievances (Covid) and conspiracy theories (Jan 6, censorship, etc) to the Biden administration.
That’s a nice trick, since Biden wasn’t the president on Jan 6.
