@dansinker.com is a very good, thoughtful writer. This idea of Doing the Work –whether it’s writing, or music, or being a parent, or whatever is important to you – is something to think about as we head into 2026.
This year we've been told over and over that there are shortcuts to Doing The Work. But there aren't, not really.

Here on the shortest day of the longest year I wrote a little defense of Doing The Work. dansinker.com/posts/2025-1...

There are three key “shadow fleets” - Russia, Venezuela and Iran. The less Venezuelan oil on the market, the better for Russia. With this administration, there is ALWAYS a Russia angle.
This is an act of war and the Trump admin is doing everything they can to provoke a Gulf of Tonkin incident.

This @adamserwer.bsky.social Atlantic piece shows how the 14th and 15th Amendments are being rolled back, pushing us toward an “Antebellum Constitution” that tolerated racial inequality instead of protecting equal citizenship. It’s a powerful critique, and well worth your time. Gift article below.

The Supreme Court and the president are undermining the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

The @oversightdemocrats.house.gov have done a great job on Epstein. My only suggestion to them, and to their colleagues, is that they say, instead of “we need transparency,” “we need the truth.” “We need the truth” is simple, kind of catchy…and true.
This photo, file 468, from the Epstein files that includes Donald Trump has apparently now been removed from the DOJ release.

AG Bondi, is this true? What else is being covered up? We need transparency for the American public.

Killing human beings is never anything to make light of – particularly when it comes from someone who has the most powerful military in the history of the world at his disposal. This is beyond obscene.

Other, apparently more morally developed countries, deal with this stuff appropriately.

🧵 An observation: I’m often disappointed when people, particularly academics, declare “AI is bad.” It seems intellectually lazy. It’s like saying “books are bad” because a reader did something dumb based on bad information from a book. The tech is bigger than a bad recipe answer from ChatGPT. 1/9
"An AI-assembled version of Gargano’s Christmas cake, for instance, would have people cooking a 6-inch cake for 3 to 4 hours at 320°F (160°C).

'You’d end up with charcoal!' she said. Meanwhile, traffic to her turkey recipe is already down 40% year over year."

The Mirage of “Direct to the People”: How Trump’s Healthcare Plan Would Destroy the System Overnight

It sounds populist. It’s actually a handout to insurance companies and a disaster for working Americans.

It’s a safe bet he’s never read The Great Gatsby, but the irony couldn’t be sharper. Fitzgerald’s novel is a searing critique of obscene wealth, selfishness, and moral decay – and yet, Trump’s circle saw it as a party theme.

I love this. Candy + a book. Fantastic.
I always thought if I ever owned a house I’d make us “the book house” each Halloween.

Getting all the chapter books, MG reads, and YA (we had a lot of teens last year, and yes, teenagers are kids don’t be jerks to them on Halloween) sorted for tomorrow!

250 giveaway books! But also candy.

SNAP benefits are ending. Food banks are bracing. And the GOP’s blaming Democrats for a shutdown they caused. The good news? America sees through it — and you can help your neighbors while keeping truth alive.

Loved this from @meredithmeredith. A plain-spoken look at the nuts-and-bolts reality of running a service like Signal. This is a clear-eyed explainer on what it takes to make apps like Signal work at scale – and the dependence on a staggeringly complex infrastructure only a few companies provide.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.
