Digital humanities librarian and literary historian. I enjoy books and movies, especially science fiction. Also website design, data visualization, digital preservation, and other similarly nerdy things.

How about a nationwide solidarity strike?
Minnesota labor unions voiced their support for a statewide economic strike on Jan. 23. Organizers are asking all Minnesotans to not attend school or work and not to shop on Friday to protest the ICE surge in the state.

I know there's a lot of controversy about the Cracker Barrel logo, so I worked up a new option that should be good with everyone... The barrel is back, but it's now guarded by Scubble, The Cracker Goblin. I also worked up a new slogan for the company!

The shape of milk jugs recently changed slightly and I’m still a little thrown off every time I grab the milk, which I guess means that milk has gone woke?

I hate the word “grooming.” I hate it when the right uses it & when the left uses it, like I’ve come to hate “woke” & “trigger warning” & so many other thought-killing cliches that are dropped in sentence-fragment comments on social media posts. I’m exhausted by the parataxis of internet discourse.

Wild that "conscious uncoupling" is no longer the funniest piece of relationship drama that Chris Martin has been a part of.

"Our research shows that students find running difficult and frequently avoid doing it, so we are offering wheelchairs that can easily be integrated into your curriculum."
"But I'm a gym teacher and this is a track & field class."

This is what talking to EdTech vendors about A.I. is like.

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons: "If you look before January 20, and even after January 20, the men & women of ICE did not have to have masks on their face. Me personally, I don't want those officers having to wear masks bc it's hot, it's dangerous. But ICE agents are being doxxed at a horrible rate"

A lot of D'Onofrio characters would probably endorse Cuomo. Gomer Pyle, Carl Rudolph Stargher, Vic Hoskins, Wilson Fisk....

Something tells me Abbie Hoffman would go a different way though.

Not only an issue with programming--building, maintaining, & fixing systems are 3 mutually reinforcing processes, & when you outsource any 1 of those you undermine your ability to do the other 2, which is a fundamental danger that gen AI poses to some (not all! but probably many) kinds of work.
The *moment* chatgpt regurgitates some slop code, it becomes code the programmer has no mental model for, and definitely can't be fucked to read instead of giving it another pass through the bullshit machine.

The programmer cannot maintain code, which is like 90% of what programming *is*
