When my house and community burned - where was the satellite information? A very raw blog post I am putting up so folks in the satellite, geospatial and tech fields can listen firsthand why I think we are failing the situations that need us the most.

I share @rabernat.bsky.social excitement about icechunk!!! On top of delivering 100x performance, it can make impossible tasks possible.

Why am I so excited to endorse #icechunk and #virtualizarr?

Does anyone know of any scholarships or funds for career development/conference attendance for federal folks recently laid off? Trying to get some amazingly talented and knowledgable people at some upcoming summer conferences...

I've long accepted (and really enjoyed) moving from scientist to science-enabler in the type of day-to-day work I do, but nothing replaces the stoke of teaching students some basic amount of geospatial analytics & watching them quickly adapt codes to perform climate risk assessments on the fly 🥹 💚🌎

A project I've been working on for the last 6 months. I feel really strongly about making geospatial technology and data available and understood by as many people as possible. And that requires getting creative with the ways we share information. This is my small contribution to that effort.

Who here provides contract services to support open source GIS software like GDAL, PROJ, QGIS, PostGIS, GeoTools, Leaf map, etc.? I am not looking myself for said services, but I would love to see how diverse the ecosystem is. #gischat

The surge in wildfire disasters that wipe whole towns, neighborhoods, and suburbs off the map is simply not sustainable (for so very many reasons). We see this through wholesale collapse of communities & mass displacement, though skyrocketing rents & imploding insurance markets.

We lost our home in the #PalisadesFire and right now I don’t have many words. We love these mountains, the animals and our communities. Grateful for every moment of sunshine and peace in this little cottage and grateful that we got out in time.

In 1999, NASA's first EOS mission went up and the way we look at Earth from above has changed. Since then , the Earth Observatory has been sharing fantastic imagery and its related science with everyone. The EO is now a grown up.

I missed giving my AGU talk, but I joined #ScenefromAbove for an extended version - chatting about the need for federated compute, finding the right abstraction for satellite data distribution, and how the not-so-sexy work of metadata standards (and their gaps) are holding us back. 🎧

I’m on my way to #AGU24, remembering AGU 2015 when Elon Musk was a keynote. I was a very broke PhD student at UCLA and paid to change my flights for a chance to hear Elon. He began with a blunt statement to a room of mostly Earth scientists - that the largest discoveries on Earth were over.

With Twitter becoming a textbook example of enshitification - I'm very happy to have joined Bluesky and find once again a meaningful feed of posts/connections. A real question - can enshitification of any social media platform ever be prevented?
