Most of the London-crime chat is just code for racism. They don't really mean that an area is dangerous. They mean that it contains black people/Muslims and want to insinuate that this entails danger.

Yep, it's bollocks. The moments I've felt least safe are in medium-sized towns around chucking-out time. London always felt fairly safe to me in comparison and now more so than ever.
The idea that London has become less safe in recent years is quite strange - just look at how once "dangerous" areas have been transformed in recent years. Gentrification comes with its own issues but streets are packed with visitors and city far more welcoming than when I moved here a decade ago.
