Neben der Sendung mit der Maus weckt kaum ein anderes Bild so schnell Kindheitserinnerungen wie dieses.

One way I have found to mourn someone is to set up a monthly sustaining donation to a mutual aid effort they cared about. If you can join me in honoring Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social with a sustaining donation today, please do. Thank you Alice, and I will not let the bastards grind me down.

Brave, funny, loving, shameless, compassionate, horny, and in solidarity with everyone fighting a good fight: Alice Wong was the example of how to live your life. Live it in such a way that people around the world gush about how much they loved you when you pass. Alice knew how to live!

FWIW it’s an ADHD topos… there’s zero actual data on how and/ or why this works, but anecdotally a lot of us like listening to podcasts/ audio books better this way. However, here it’s clearly ND supremacy bullshit; he’s trying to brag about his cognitive abilities (processing speed etc.).
*maximum alpha at 1.25x speed* continuously lives on in my head, unfortunately.

This is solid reading advice, full stop. I particularly like the emphasis on reading being an activity – grab a pen & get into it, yes please. And also yes, ultimately, ‚difficult texts’ need to be read in print (‚difficult‘ = whatever text sb has difficulties with at any given time).
An old post from late in my Twitter days. I'm going to have to update this in some fashion for the post-generative AI context, but in that context I think something like it remains important -- perhaps is even more so. I do not think these are skills that should be outsourced, even if they could be
Reading advice for young historians
This is a sheet of reading tips I’ve developed over the past few years for my first-year students in history. I posted it on Twitter yesterday, as a png image and a tweet thread, and it got q…

Dear colleagues, we drafted an open letter to the conference of German federal ministers of education asking for a reform of the Privatdozentur, that stage in a German academic's career where your work is not paid - a situation that can easily extend over years.

Alas, I did not see this in time, but here is how to delete an academia edu account without agreeing to their appalling new TOS:
In the dialogue box asking you to agree, DO NOT click agree: instead click on the TOS link which will open another tab. In the top right of that tab you can go to your account settings and delete your account.

Excited to finally announce the release of my first ever book, and the first ever book from we here press. It is a pocket-size guide to my archival theories and experiences in the form of essays- some you may have heard in part as lectures, some which are unpublished until now.

The foundation funded my PhD project; we’ve been informed about this attack a couple of days ago. Still early, but whoever did this would/ might have had access to personal data of thousands of students and academics who are/ were members of German trade unions (or otherwise politically active).
🚨 Hans-Böckler-Stiftung 🇩🇪 has confirmed it has been hit by a #ransomware attack. Critical IT systems are impacted but the foundation can be contacted by email and phone.

No hackers have claimed the attack as of yet.

Same but with me as somebody working on critical editions who hangs out with the rest of literary studies a lot. My people are unraveling & I don’t necessarily only mean ‚text’.
Being a philosopher who hangs out with psychologists a lot, it is truly shocking how much more professional and put-together, as a whole, psychologists are compared to us

Sure true, but also plenty academics & ppl with lived experience have been fairly correct in their early assessments re: Trump, Covid or Gaza. And that’s bc they’re thinking in terms of overarching dynamics as opposed to specific things: WWW & AI are new, yes, but so were radio & cinema ‚back then‘.
historical comparisons fail because we are encountering something especially new, specific to our context, and uniquely terrible in its own right
