Happy to say, yesterday I sent off for peer review my edited collection on "Tabletop Gaming the Middle Ages", comprising eleven chapters addressing various aspects of the medieval and medievalism in board and miniature wargames, LARPs and TTRPGs

Let's hope the reviewers love it as much as I do!

See @katexe.bsky.social, I don't _only_ talk about:

🌿 poisoning and
💀 grave robbing - I talk about
🔥 arson too.

...perfectly normal range of interests 😉
On my way to Gent for the "Medieval Texts and their Social Contexts" conference 😊

I'll be talking about the verbal repetition and orality elements in The Lombard Laws on Fire (Arson)

Hi #MedievalSky

Does anybody have a copy to hand of Nicoletta Francovich Onesti's
Vestigia longobarde in Italia (568-774)?

If so, could you check if there is an entry for "asto"? And if there is, could you send me a photo? (I left my copy in the office)

Many thanks in advance 🤗

Remember guys, @pcsunion.bsky.social staff at the BL are on strike for the next two weeks. Please don't cross the picket line to go to reading rooms, attend exhibitions or anything else. They've endured so much on low pay since the cyberattack in 2023 and the least we can do is have their backs now.
Secret Maps opens today! 🤫 🗺️

From medieval manuscripts to Cold War espionage, our new exhibition explores how maps have hidden as much as they revealed for over 600 years.

Just ran masquerade #TTRPG
players made into vampires in an attempt to destabilise Prince Katherine's city, in an attack led by the anarch powerhouse Mary. The 'lush' ancilla Lydia survived through the efforts of her bodyguard-ghoul hubby George 'Wick'.

NPC inspirations not spotted until after😉

Having a quick break and am re-familiarising myself with some of the first edition Vampire The Dark Ages (1996) rules for an upcoming TTRPG or two in the planning.

Jumping mechanics reveal more options for travel between medieval cities than I had expected 😉

Finally continuing, and we're in Londinium

🎲 Pockets picked in the market, but Merlin (!) gave me a coin

🎲 In the squires mock quarterstaff battle, I fumbled and took 6 damage...

🎲 then after Arthur pulled the sword, King Lot tried to kill him. Shouted a warning, but got punched for another 3!
Yesterday I ran the 6ed #Pendragon #TTRPG solo-quest from the starter set, and managed to roll so badly that my Page:

🎲 Was run over by a hobbyhorse in joust training (took 6 damage on 1d6),

🎲 Got lost in the woods on a boar hunt,

🎲 Dropped a platter, got sent to the stables and missed the feast.

these thoughts have been rattling around in my brain for about a year and i finally had some time to scribble them down. some thoughts on how games might emulate the act of 'doing' history

Historical interpretation as non-linear narrative
How games can reflect history as a discipline, not just historical facts.

I remember being at a conference in 2009 or 2010, and the American speaker paused to ask the audience how to pronounce Launceston - only to be met by a chorus of English medievalists all pronouncing it wrong... 🤣
Fowey

But the nearby hamlet of Penventinue will probably get even more people, and a bit further off Launceston for sure 😉
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?
