Delighted that peer-review on my "Tabletop Gmaing the Middle Ages" just came back - and we rolled a Crit!

(*must* be published, with minor corrections)

Hopefully these eleven chapters on the Medieval and Medievalism in Board- and Miniature War- Games, LARP and TTRPGs will be in print 2026/27!

🎲✨📖
Happy to say, yesterday I sent off for peer review my edited collection on "Tabletop Gaming the Middle Ages", comprising eleven chapters addressing various aspects of the medieval and medievalism in board and miniature wargames, LARPs and TTRPGs

Let's hope the reviewers love it as much as I do!

SO SO GLAD to see a PROPER rebuttal against Silvia Federici's very wrong scholarship in the latest Magic, Ritual and Witchcraft! Thank you, Rita Voltmer!

In 2025 we raised ~$300 to fund a new website which remains unspent. As our final act upon this material plane, we will be using that money to award 6x $50 USD micro grants to ttrpg designers or content creators that could use a small boost.

Just discovered that "Werkzeuge der Historiker:innen", which is intended to be a new introduction to the #historicalauxiliarysciences, also includes a chapter on genetic history by Jörg Feuchter.

it's funny how 10 yrs ago historians would talk about how twitter would be the most amazing archive for future social history and now people are posting old screenshots going 'i found the tweet!' like they've unearthed a long-lost charter that was lurking in a dusty municipal archive in a small town

I am really looking forward to the release of this - Not least because the Pendragon TTRPG is looking like it will be the first game I run for the medievalists group I'm setting up here in Graz, and hopefully also in February/March too 😁

Especial thanks to @samdrowe.bsky.social and Kaiyue Zhang for their significant efforts in bringing this together. We can't wait to see you all!

While I agree with this sentiment, I can't help being facetious and emending in a sub-category:

TTRPGs are *also* manuals for *making research even more* fun. Relax

After all:

In TTRPGs you play as (imagined) bodies in (imagined) space. The game / adventure text should begin there, at character eye-level, instead of burdening players / GMs with the adding cognitive load of translation.

The "traditional" structure of TTRPGs puts an enormous amount of pressure on the GM to learn/refine & very little on the players.

Which is somehow seen as more reasonable than spreading the load of learning/contribution across the whole table.

Broader implications about community in there, y'all.

Today I've:

💀 Drafted CFP for conference this Sept. on #antique & #medieval grave reopening, interactions with the dead (to circulate soon, hopefully)

💀 Drafted a 'minigraph' proposal on, ummm... despoiling the dead in Salic law

🌿 Drafted some ideas on poison-magic in Salic law

Pretty good day!

My unbearable hipster ludologist-medievalist phase means that i have a chapter in a forthcoming edited collection (hopefully out to peerreview soon) where I look at the representation of boardgaming in #medieval set #TTRPG and historiographic accounts...

Not quite the response needed here 😉
Ok I admit I'm going through my unbearable hipster TTRPG design phase but like....COULD you design an RPG around two people playing chess? Surely someone has already done that (please give me links, I'm mulling something over)

Does anyone have to hand Azzara & Moro's (1998), I capitolari italici. Storia e diritto della dominazione carolingia in Italia?

If so, could you photograph their edition and translation of Synod of Pavia (850) §23 on magic users ans poisoners?
(I think it's ca. pages 196-99)

Thanks!
