Those values are why I am fighting for a better New York, where our working-class neighbors are not forced to enlist to escape poverty, and where we don't turn our backs on them once their service has ended.

During his service, he traveled the world and saw the best and worst of humanity, and he raised me to be anti-war based on his experiences. He instilled his values in me, and I carry them with me every day. They make me who I am.

Today, on Veterans Day, I can't help but think of my father, one of my heroes in life. He served in the Navy in Vietnam as a young man; he chose the Navy because his older brother was in the Army and told him to avoid it.
