When this is all done we will finally have an answer to the question people have been asking for decades: what if Juan Perón had been a monumentally stupid and breathtakingly narcissistic real estate developer from Queens.
New column on the debasement of the $. In the past two days, it has rebounded on news of the Warsh nomination, but it's still down since Davos and Trump's threats to Greenland and Europe. And many big strategic questions remain, including over Fed independence.

How Trump Is Debasing the Dollar and Eroding U.S. Economic Dominance
The President’s coercive policies, including his latest threats against Greenland, are prompting some foreign investors to think twice about parking their money with Uncle Sam.

But: CBP is uniquely lawless.

As this piece by @vermontgmg.bsky.social points out, CBP has a LONG history of lawlessness--it's officers likely get arrested at a HIGHER per capita rate than undocumented immigrants ... and that's not taking into account our general unwillingness to arrests cops.
"ICE 101" — How Trump changed ICE and CBP into a fascist secret police
ICE and CBP are fatally flawed products of the post-9/11 War on Terror — now Trump has weaponized those very flaws to occupy America.

Curtis Yarvin's intellect is about as deep as a puddle.
The far right's smartest people are deeply ignorant.

Here's Curtis Yarvin showing he knows nothing about the history of civil disobedience.

Henry David Thoreau invented the term in 1849, to describe practices that had existed long before that.

And an election victory is no guarantee of re-democratisation. Fidesz are soaked into the Hungarian state like cat piss on a carpet.
For over a year, polls have put Hungary’s opposition party ahead of Viktor Orban’s. But a big lead in the polls is no guarantee of an election victory
Viktor Orban may lose his next election
He trails in polls, but the rules favour Trump’s man in Hungary

The violent occupation of Minneapolis started with a vlog. I've wanted to find a framework to describe Nick Shirley & others like him: "Influencer" is too quaint. "Journalist" is obviously wrong.

I landed on "slopagandist."

This post (JD's, not JW's) further reinforces my belief that a low-hanging-fruit law for a future Dems to pass is one that uses spending power to restrict what govt officials can post from their official social media accounts: just announcements, and no pics except narrow cases (like weather maps).
This is just misleading. There is a big difference between saying state resources can’t be used to enforce fed’l civil immigration policy & local cops refusing to assist fed’l partners in an emergency. Deliberately conflating the two is disingenuous.

Bezos spent $40 million on this, of which $28 million was a direct gift to the Trunp family, plus another $35 million marketing blitz for a propaganda clunker absolutely nobody could have believed would recoup even a small fraction of that cost. It is a flat bribe, right out in public.
Amazon’s MGM studios spent tens of millions, but the documentary is projected to make just $1M in its first week.

This comes as a new report from Rolling Stone details serious labor issues and two-thirds of the film’s staff requesting not to be credited at the end of the film. trib.al/Clr03cD

Some of the quotes on this are exactly as expected. Two thoughts: 1) As a general rule, do not punish the behaviour you wish to see (see below). 2) In *this* scenario, if you want ideological purity/the chance to liquidate rival factions, it's advisable to do this after the principal foe is defeated

My Christopher Browning sense is growing...
Literally EVERYTHING else aside:

Officers involved in shootings - even shootings that everybody agrees were justified - always take time off to emotionally process their experience, go to therapy, process it.

Sending somebody right back out says "this is an everyday part of your job, expect it."
CBP chief Bovino has confirmed that the officers who executed Alex Pretti in the street yesterday are not only *not on administrative leave,* they have all been reassigned to other jurisdictions and are all on the street today.

This is totally unheard of for any officer-involved shooting

Everybody should read this book
Browning’s study of Reserve Police Battalion 101 shows how average men became mass shooters through peer pressure, conformity, and step by step escalation. Many were not ideological fanatics. The key dynamic was social belonging, fear of standing apart, and adapting to a violent new norm. 5/

Remember when these guys lied that they were preserving Confederate monuments because you had to leave up the whole messy contested historical record rather than erasing history?
More than 400 years of history and a decade of advocacy were torn down Thursday afternoon when National Park Service employees removed every single display at the President’s House.
