These words were absolutely appalling, and the Government was right to criticise them. But there’s an astonishing hypocrisy in condemning racist sentiments like these while building policy that actively reflects and encourages them.

We've signed this letter raising serious concerns about the govt’s planned changes to earned settlement.

These changes will punish people already building a life in the UK, force families into further hardship, and solve nothing while creating new problems that hit the most vulnerable hardest.
Don't change rules for migrants already in UK, Labour MPs tell Mahmood
Some 35 Labour MPs are among those who have written to the home secretary to raise concerns about the plans.

“Immigration policy is about the conditions for entry. Citizenship policy is about the conditions for staying permanently and becoming part of the host society. One of the many problems with the Labour government’s approach to citizenship and immigration is that it has confused one with the other.”

Sadly unsurprising to read there has been a five-fold increase in the no. of refugee households who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, in the last 4 years. At Boaz we have seen a growing number of people with refugee status in need of our services in recent years

The Government plans to make it significantly harder for many people to be granted indefinite leave to remain. They are proposing to extend the standard route to settlement from 5 to 10 years and for some groups of people their proposed routes to settlement could increase to 15, 20 or 30 years.

🚦For many people seeking asylum, life feels like waiting at a red light - trapped in limbo, unable to move forward, unsure what’s next.

Even after a positive asylum decision, often the uncertainty just changes shape, as many people struggle to access safe housing in the short 28-day window.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported our van-tastic fundraiser in 2025! 🚐

The fundraiser launched during Refugee Week last summer and thanks to your generosity, we now have our own van to help keep Boaz houses safe, warm and welcoming for the people we support.

In the past year, Boaz has been there for over 750 people who accessed our support. In 2025 we walked alongside more people than ever before who were facing destitution and homelessness, even as times have grown tougher.

We are so grateful to everyone who has been part of supporting our work.

In recent weeks, it was good to see the Government recognising the urgent need to address growing homelessness through its national strategy, but it doesn't go nearly far enough in recognising how its asylum and immigration policies drive homelessness and rough sleeping.
