Today, we launch our new data briefing for 2024/2025.

It's never been more urgent to fight for a welcoming society, where people seeking asylum, refugees and other migrants are free from destitution and homelessness and can live with dignity as part of their community.

This year, we have felt dismayed and horrified as hostile policies increased and racist rhetoric continues to creep into mainstream political discourse.

But solidarity trumps hate.

In 2025, we have been proud to support the extraordinary efforts of our membership.

Some rare good news!

Following a legal challenge by Deighton Pierce Glynn and significant pressure from our sector inc. @homelesslink.bsky.social, until 16 Jan the Govt has agreed to extend the move-on period for newly-granted refugees facing street homelessness to 56 days.

The government has published its homelessness strategy for England. This was a vital opportunity to tackle asylum and immigration policies that drive homelessness and destitution but it fell short naccom.org.uk/a-national-p...

Cross-government approaches to tackling homelessness are welcome, but government strategy must always tackle immigration policies that further push people into destitution.

NRPF conditions are forcing people into destitution.

NACCOM members accommodated 1,509 people with restricted eligibility or No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) in 2024/2025.

NACCOM members were forced to turn away 3,450 people experiencing destitution and homelessness in 2024/2025 due to lack of capacity.

This is likely to be a severe underestimation of the scale of unmet need.

The move-on period is a critical time for people to find safe, secure housing and support after receiving a decision on their claim and being asked to leave Home Office accommodation.

The Government must reinstate the 56-day extension.

Very proud of the @naccomnetwork.bsky.social team and network for this data launch, but the reading is grim 👇🏻

In summary: hostile Government policies = increased homelessness for refugees, people seeking asylum and other migrants

Refugees are being failed by statutory services and a shortened move-on period.

2,008 refugees were accommodated by the network this year, a 106% increase on 2022/23.

With the steady drip of racist and anti-immigration sentiment into mainstream politics, Government rhetoric has remained hostile towards people in the asylum and immigration systems.

This experience from one of our members this year is not good enough, but sadly all too common.

Ensuring everyone can obtain free, good-quality legal advice is a central part of any fair asylum and immigration system.

Charities can’t plug the gap caused by the legal aid emergency and government failures in asylum and immigration policy.
