The options seem to be that the progenitor species was phototropic and it didn't occur to them that an animal would be sentient, or it's just genocide with extra steps.
Plus the ethics of the situation are weird. Plants specially evolved fruits and berries to be eaten by animals so their seeds would be fertilized and spread. They are denying them a key part of their reproductive cycle.

The prior one was a big miss for me, but hopefully this weekend I'll have time for the latest one. It does seem much more like a logical expansion of the game's principles, while the previous one seemed like trying to staple on an entirely different game.
