Never in my wildest dreams, as a 23 year old reading Sofia Petrovna in an East European literature class at the U of Toronto, did I think there would be affinities so close to home.

What Is Happening Here
Anti-Jewish hate in Canada is off the charts. What is Happening Here is a raw, thorough, and honest examination of a vibrant, accepting society seized by a sudden crisis of hate.

With no UN Security Council mandate and unable to claim self defence, it is difficult to conceive of possible legal justifications for the US strike that captured Nicolás Maduro.

Read Marc Weller's latest analysis for Chatham House ⤵️
The US capture of President Nicolás Maduro – and attacks on Venezuela – have no justification in international law
This may be the moment when Western Europe realizes that the US has abandoned the core values that united them for the past century, writes the head of Chatham House’s International Law Programme.

Scientific funding is a net negative: "European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained"

Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding
With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

Academic friends, l'd love your opinion. If you had to choose between your top choice publisher (based on the other books they publish, quality of the publication), and second choice but with Open Access, who would you pick and why?

The hero who disarmed one of the terrorists in Sydney turned out to be 43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmed — a fruit shop owner and father of two.

He was shot twice and is currently in hospital. He is scheduled to undergo surgery.

He had no experience with weapons of any kind.
