What does #ecology have to do with #innovation?

#Scalinglaws of innovation don’t just come from city size, they emerge from how ideas compete and spread.

Then, inequality is not a bug; it’s an emergent feature.

What do Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Mortal Kombat have to teach us about #cultural #evolution? As a social-technological phenomenon, #arcade game genres evolved like cultural species—some diversified, while others became "living fossils." 🕹️🧪 👉 doi.org/10.1017/ehs....

@svalver.bsky.social et al. analyzed 15 years of Gene Ontology evolution, finding that GO changes not just incrementally, but also via major, curator-driven restructurings.

Punctuated evolution by “hopeful monsters” to enable terrestrialization?
Is it possible that evolution actually follows more dramatic and "unprovable" paths than what typical gradual models predict?

Amazing & ground breaking findings from @rosafernandez.bsky.social lab!

Can the structure of knowledge evolve like life itself?

In our new MBE paper, we show that the Gene Ontology evolves through mechanisms shared with cultural and technological systems—reuse, modularity, and curator-driven restructuring.

Here’s what we found: 🧵

Why does theory matter in marine restoration? Cristina Linares gave a great lecture at RAMON MARGALEF colloquia on recovery depth, habitat connectivity, facilitation, and succession cascades. i.e. Slow-growing species can survive fluctuating pressures—living on borrowed time. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

New key finding:
Landscapes of fragmented habitat have lower diversity, at all scales, than do unfragmented landscapes.

Habitat fragmentation does not compensate for the loss of local (alpha) diversity by increasing the diversity among fragments (beta diversity).

What is complexity? What kind of approach is needed to define it? Here's a 1977 paper by Robert Rosen, one of the pioneers of System Science, discussing how information, error and scale are central to this problem: tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1...

How do we make ecological networks relevant to biodiversity conservation and management? 🌏🧪

In a new preprint, @gabdans.bsky.social & @ceresbarros.bsky.social et al. suggest that the main challenge remains uncertainty and its propagation. But the good news is that they suggest a way forward!
