This was an example of Jewett's philosophy of "moral suasion," achieving temperance via social pressure, as opposed to legislation. It backfired when the press picked up on it and began to publish an update to the list, including drinks named after Jewett & his Moral Suasion. Citation in alt-text.

The earliest mention of a drink named Knickerbocker comes from the December 1842 edition of the Journal of the American Temperance Union, where it was included in a list of drinks served at the Peter B. Brigham's Oyster Saloon at the Concert Hall in Boston. Doctor Jewett attempted to shame Brigham.

FASHIONABLE GROG SHOPS.
These horrid houses, now fitting up in all our cities at great expense and with splendid allurements, are, we fear, preparing our young men of rich familes for a most bitter end. We know not that there is hope for any release while their parents, proud in their riches and feeling themselves exempted from all moral reform, stand aloof from the temperance enterprize. One is fitted up in great splendor in Philadephia. Here we have our Pinteux and Palmos; and one has just been opened, "a gorgeous and neat saloon," in Boston, at Concert Hall, by a Mr. Brigham. Dr. Jewett, the indomitable foe of alcohol, has visited this establishment and copied the bill of far as follows:

He then adds:
"Look over the list, reader. How very expressive! How significant ofthe effects which tose compounts will be likely to produce. 'Poor man's puncyh!' Rather too costly a drink for poor men at twelve and a half cents a glass, when pure water may be had for the asking. How long would it take a poor man to become rich by swallowning 'Poor man's punch' at that price? 'Poor man's.' To be sure, any man is poor indeed who will allow himself to swallow such compunds...

or at any rate he will be poor. 'Smasher!' Yes, how much crockery, how many windows, carriages, etc., it has smashed, and how many skulls? 'Wormwood Floater!' How expressive this is. Its influence has been more bitter than wormwood. It has floated a cargo of wormwood and gall to the door of many a stately mansion, as to the hearth of the poor. go on Mr. Brigham,and you many have the comfortable assurance that you are mingling for many a wife and mother a mixture more bitter than wormwood. Ah! more bitter than death itself. You are initiating many a thoughtless young man into habits that may prove his ruin, and you know it. How can you, for paltry gain, destroy the peace of families, the hopes of parents, the health and life of your fellow citizens, andthe souls of men? Where are the officials whenthe laws of the State are trampled upon at every corner.
Such establishments are ten times more dangerous that the subterranean dog-holes in Ann and Broad streets. And we are determined to do our utmost to tear off the embellishments which men seek to throw around this accursed system, and show it in its naked deformity.
