For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Happy New Year! 🎉 As I stare at my long list of sabbatical plans, with "getting the old website fixed" among the first items, this article spoke to me and made me laugh: anniemueller.com/posts/how-i-...

Appreciate this essay. I discovered Octavia Butler’s work relatively recently and felt both illuminated and saddened reading her books. Glad to learn more about her.

Thank you for the reminder. Just donated to @pbs.org using the link
By the way, PBS SoCal lost all of its federal funding this year.

There's TONS of really amazing programming and you can get unlimited streaming on the PBS app on any Roku/Apple/etc device for literally $5/month. I've been binge-watching Frontline over the holiday.

Consumers don’t know if their medications came from factories that used dirty water, were infested by insects or birds, or were outright banned from shipping drugs to the U.S.

Our new app provides answers that the FDA won’t.

Heartbreaking and infuriating. Amazing reporting too!
THREAD: It was supposed to be a routine surgery. So when the doctor stepped out, Sandra Parker wasn’t sure she heard right.

Her husband’s heart couldn’t have stopped for more than 5 or 6 minutes, the doctor was saying.

“That’s not a lot of time,” Mrs. Parker thought. “Is it?”

This 💪👉 We must set aside our culture of self-service and band together with our neighbors and friends and families and create the kind of mutual aid that will weather whatever is to come and craft the framework that will deliver a better future beyond this abominable system.
The wealthy have stolen so much wealth and rigged the system so far that our economy is on the verge of collapse. They’re pushing fascism and dismantling democracy to get at what little remains.

We don’t have to live like this. We deserve better.
