Today’s show was my last at CNN. My closing message: It’s never a good time to bow down to a tyrant… don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to fear. Hold on to the truth… and hope.

Quick visit to Ankara and had to go to Atatürk's mausoleum. The breadth of his vision was incredible, but like most men with great power he had some blind spots. His biographer Andrew Mango said : "He was a man of the Enlightenment, but the men who made the Enlightenment did not always behave well"

It is past midnight in The Hague, the Netherlands, and I walk back to my hotel, wondering how Dutch people can bike with such energy and ease even at this ungodly hour of the day.

Shocking statistic from recent UK Parliament debate on Grenfell inquiry report - 7 years after the deadly fire, in half of all high rise residential buildings in UK, there's been no action to make them safe. That's a human rights failure. #JusticeforGrenfell

Following #Kristallnacht 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to camps. Most were released on the condition that they left Germany immediately

Find out about the little-known story of the #KitchenerCamp which was a haven for 4,000 of these men https://buff.ly/48Xwhi9

I understand people who worry about escalation. I respect the need to weigh decisions carefully.
What I do not respect are people prioritizing domestic political gamesmanship over strategic thinking, and people who think doing nothing at least absolves them from doing something wrong.

1001 days.
I remember waking up to the horrible news that Russia had invaded Ukraine.
And I remember feeling very strongly, what I remain convinced of now. There is no point pretending that this is some distant thing that only happens to other people, far away.

This is about our future, too.

A word on the Allison Pearson free speech row, and what she describes as a ‘Kafkaesque’ threat to it. We asked her on @thenewsagents.bsky.social to discuss.
She said: ‘No. And if you get any aspect of the story wrong my lawyers will be watching.’
Gotta love a free speech warrior 🤷🏻‍♂️

Word of the Day is as beautiful as it is underused. ‘Confelicity’ is finding joy in the happiness and success of others.

Plenty of pundits are telling us “cheer up, Trump’s all hot air. He doesn’t really mean it.” History is littered with such self-deceptions, and they don’t age well. In fact, these confident chin-strokers have often proved to be a major part of the problem.

Well how do you do, Private William McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
And I’ll rest for a while in the warm summer sun,
I’ve been walking all day long, and I’m nearly done…

Doorbell just rang. A package from Australia. The bookseller Nicholas Pounder sent me a small press print of my Times Literary Supplement poem, "Criseyde." It's a private, gift copy, and it has brought tears to my eyes this morning, for so many reasons.

This is my second Elif Shafak book- the first made me visit the trees in my garden and give more care to my fig tree. This book I really loved. It’s brutal but poetic. Her writing is beautiful. It would have been a better Booker winner in 2022 than Seven Moons- which I really disliked. 💙📚

Pathetic cartoon in the Times this morning of Starmer and Scholz (wearing Lederhosen), eating Bratwurst together. I really should not let this nonsense get under my skin (anymore) but sometimes the ignorance, cliché thinking and lazy arrogance of parts of the U.K. media is a little hard to take.
