Hey, tossing out a question for, uh, causal inference sky. If I'm interested in a theory that involves bidirectional causation, say like Bandura, what are good resources for modeling those? See so much about DAGs but not much about messier cyclical stuff...

None of you are safe from the kidsbookification of the behavioral sciences. Watch your backs 👀

It was stupidly fun working on Psychology for Beginners (11+)

🐙 We used an octopus to take kids through perception, cognition, judgement & decision making, and more

Why? Because they have 9 brains. Duh.

Such a bizarre time in tech as a user: can use billion dollar models for free. Can't reliably search for and find specific_file.txt on my laptops.

Fascinating talk by @naitian.org about emotions in films.

Such clear arcs over narrative time! Emotion increases over the course of the movie, and movies in general have become less emotional.

Emotional range (entropy) varies by genre: thrillers have a narrower range than horror.

Finally our editorial for the "What makes a good theory?" special issue is out (co-edited with @irisvanrooij.bsky.social, @jcskewes.bsky.social, Sashank Varma, and Todd Wareham). It's an interdisciplinary issue and the contents are transdisciplinary.

After a review process so long and intensive that the title changed twice, I'm excited/relieved that "How to Distinguish Motivated Reasoning from Bayesian Updating" is accepted at @polbehavior.bsky.social.

When I see really clean markdown docs it's such a great smell: indicates tech awareness that has gravitated towards functional simplicity rather than fancy complexities. Love it.

LLMs have done something I didn't think possible: appreciate when something returns json.

This is often unsung work and they don't toot their own horns.

Today my eight year old was cheering and jumping up and down upstairs, so I went to see what he was watching on youtube and it was a video showing the GDP of countries growing over time. I asked him why he found it so exciting — he put two fingers on my chest and said “that’s none of your business.”
