“No nazis, no kings”… doesn’t get more American than that
Distressing and beautiful all at once.
Dearth of a Nation (2025)
Without getting too "Debbie Doomsday" about everything going on, I've been trying to think lately about our national mythology.
I don't mean myths in the sense of lies we tell ourselves (though they do enter into the calculus), but rather the stories we believe...

@byalexcoffey.bsky.social Just came to make sure you knew your sister is an answer to the NYT’s sports connection puzzle today (sorry for the spoiler for anyone else seeing this and playing). Figured you might want to know before it resets at midnight.

@timmiller.bsky.social Love turning into @thebulwark.bsky.social to hear likeminded people freaking out together. Came to say a particular thanks for the @tracyalloway.bsky.social episode. She broke down the complicated economic current events in an approachable way for those of us not in the field.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.
Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Mina is a great follow for all things football, and some other needed perspective as well…
The way I’d put it is…a not insignificant portion of the internet—and the world, I guess—defines themselves not by the things they do and love, but their opposition to others. When you take that away, they’re bereft of purpose.
What prompts someone to create an account like that? Don’t they have a life to live or something?

The best Twitter account to follow is now the best account to follow here. Enjoy 😊
This is Meatball. He's going home for the very first time. So excited to have a human of his own. Thinking about what he's going to call you. Maybe Bob. 12/10

I’ve said it before, will doubtless say it again: These folks are going to be permanently resentful because they’re seeking political power as a substitute for cultural power, and it’s never going to give them what they actually want.
I love how far afield this is from any problem government can address. “Now that Trump won people have to like and agree with me and not tell me I suck anymore.” bsky.app/profile/yash...
2. “For the last four years, very acutely, and I know it preceded these four years as well, but there's been kind of a pressing down. A pressing down and kind of limiting what people can say.”
