1. Led by Elon Musk, the far-right has exploded in a campaign to get Netflix to remove shows with queer and trans characters.

If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

And what does that mean for those on the outside

If even just 10% of journalists took this stance publicly, we’d be in a much different place right now
Now this is a journalist who deserves respect.

Cities in America being filled with cars while cities around the world use more "old" technology like trains is a reminder that the tech we use is a choice.

Just because something is new, doesn't mean it requires replacement of what's better. But American capitalism tries to convince us otherwise.

This headline made me sad and then confused about that sadness.
The number of children injured or killed by cars while walking or riding a bike has fallen steadily since the 1970s, but CDC researcher note that this decline is not because streets are safer, but because fewer kids are out and about in the first place.
Kids need freedom. Dangerous roads make it hard to grant it.
Bigger cars, distracted drivers and worried parents mean fewer kids are roaming freely.

5 journalists are dead and the NYT decides to write a smear piece depicting Al Jazeera as a Hamas mouthpiece.

AJ is far from perfect & deserves as much scrutiny & criticism as many others. But the timing & one-sidedness of the article is an effort to legitimise the killing of AJ’s staff.

There is no proof that Sharif did anything other than report on the attacks of fellow Palestinians. But even if he did, that doesn’t make him a legitimate target while he is working as a Journalist.
On the killing of Journalists
Last night, Israel murdered 29 year old Journalist Anas Al Sharif and four other journalists in their journalist tents, away from the frontline.

I find this all so fucking tedious, the philosophy and philology and ideology and theology of it all, on and on forever, getting nowhere. The only actual question worth considering is the status of people living under the actual authority of the actual State of Israel. Everything else is commentary.
The NYTimes today has a long interview with Jonathan Greenblatt of the ADL.

Here he states, "Zionism is essential to the Jewish tradition," even though Zionism has not existed for most of Jewish history. Yes, there is a messianic yearning to return to the land, but that is not Zionism.

Hamas should release all the hostages. But it's foolish to think that would end the war
The narrative that "the war would end if Hamas released the hostages" has become a recurring talking point. It's a fantasy.

Update: some family members release. Women of umm il Kheir have begun a hunger strike until Awdah’s body is released.
Army returned yesterday to arrest more people. now 19 Palestinians, family, and community members of Awdah are in jail.
The army refuses to return the body unless there is a quiet burial and no public mourning and the burial is outside of the village.
Murderer still at home.
Cruelty is the point
Two days ago, a settler murdered Awdah Hathaleen in his village. That settler then told the army which other Palestinians to arrest, including Awdah’s family. Last night, the army raided the village and arrested more family members.
The murderer is at home by the way.

Giving Jews a special carve-out to the rules against DEI is good for neither Jews nor any other groups.
Another totally insane thing about all these agreements is they have a section saying, basically, here are all the extra steps the university should take to make sure Jewish students feel comfortable and safe, etc.

And then...

Hi, I worked at USAID. 👋

Airdrops are universally acknowledged as probably the worst and least efficient way to get aid to people. You airdrop when you a) want to want to so something but can’t, or b) you don’t want to do anything but want to look like you are.

More people will come out now against starvation. We need to call them in not out, because we need a huge tent to end this. We can and should hold them accountable but not prevent them from entering.

None of what I just wrote includes Bari Weiss.
Given that Bari Weiss has dedicated her entire adult life to anti-Palestinian racism, it seems notable that her tabloid is now tacking alongside public opinion shifts here
